India out of semi-finals contention, lose 2-3 to England
TNN, Mar 6, 2010, 09.58pm IST

NEW DELHI: Late fight by India failed to avoid a hat-trick of lost in the Hockey World Cup as European champions England beat the hosts 3-2 in a crucial Group B match at Major Dhyan Chand Stadium on Saturday.

Gurwinder Singh Chandi and skipper Rajpal Singh scored in the 54th and 58th minute respectively to cut down the lead to 2-3 for India after the European champions extended their lead over India to 3-0 within 11 minutes after halftime. England led the hosts 1-0 at halftime.

Match got little out of control in the end, as India lost Gurbaj Singh and Sardar Singh with yellow cards in the 68th and 66th minute respectively, which left the hosts with just nine players.

Five minutes after Ashley Jackson scored the second goal through their first penalty corner of the match in, Nick Catlin tapped in another goal for his team.

James Tindall scored a brilliant field goal in the 16th minute of play to give England the lead against the hosts.

India got two penalty corners in the first half but eventually failed to convert them into goal.

After two bruising matches against Spain and Australia, India have to stand up and fight again against England to keep semi-finals hope alive.

A win over Pakistan raised the expectations of the fans, creating a buzz around the Blue Sticks. In a space of three days, everything has changed.

This a different league altogether and the Indians' lack of experience showed against Australia and Spain. Let's also not forget that India had finished 11th in Monchengladbach World Cup four years ago. At least they are in with a chance to improve upon that.

India coach Jose Brasa said so much on Thursday night. "We can still fight for the fifth position," he said.

England are on a hot streak, having won three matches in a row. They have improved a lot in the past two years and are the reigning European champions.

They play a very physical game - they run hard, are lethal in counter-attacks and are solid in defence.

Australia got a taste of it on the opening day and then Pakistan suffered. Coach Jason Lee has surely done a great job with this bunch.

Zaki bahi.... any comments after the recent developments???

Hint: South Africa sinks Pakistan’s semi-final dreams by defeating them by 4-3.

doesn't matter bro........... India could not advance into next round in T20 WC 2009 and i still considered India as the third best T20 team after Pakistan and South Africa despite their poor performance. I still believed India is better than Sri Lanka or Australia those days

You can expect weird results from WC tournaments........... i remember Kenya qualified for World Cup semi final in 2003 so should we consider Kenya among the World's best teams?

We just had a bad luck this time once again :D

india drew with south africa, India should have won that match, The umpire gave an unwanted decision to review after 4-5 minuts after the game started and and when India scored, SA too review of our penalty... too bad, Umpire shouldnt have given the review

Since it was covered, on geo I managed to see the games

Basically , Pakistani player's passing is a notch slower then europeans or (South Americans)

Their height is major disadavantage , as the europeans can turn and sheild the ball with their body

But the most basic skill that I saw which lacked in Pakistani team was that when they made their passes , the ball bounced while the european teams their passing is very smooth and on the turf, so they have more time to turn and attck the opponents

Dribbling skill wise I was very happy with Shakeel's play that guy is world class player!!!

The team was considerably bad in second half showing lack of fitness in players -

Generally I think MF/FW was ok , but DF in pakistan was really bad you need to get 6'6 players in defence not 4'6 dinky midget players in defence

Also a point I noted was when Australia/Holland or other teams play the referee does not stops play he plays advantage , but when Pakistan got fouls alot of time the referee stopped our players to play untill we went back to exact position and restarted the play this game the other time lot of time to get organized in defence ....

But poistive thing is that we won alot of penelty corners , we just did not knew how to score , its not that hard ... really ...

Pakistan's hockey team quit after World Cup flop

By Sam Sheringham

In a week of dramatic sporting departures, the actions of the Pakistan men's hockey team surely take the biscuit.

Hours after a 3-2 loss to Canada put the seal on their worst ever World Cup showing, the entire squad have announced their retirement from international competition.

And if the decision implies they were nobly carrying the can while others kept their jobs, then think again - the team's coach, manager and selection committee were all sacked earlier in the day.

The news caps a bizarre 24 hours in Asian sport, which saw the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) slap bans on three former captains and Bangladesh batsman Raqibul Hasan announce his retirement from international cricket at the age of 22.

Pakistan's men's hockey team, traditionally a powerhouse of the game with three Olympic gold medals to their name, reached an all-time low with their last place in the 12-team World Cup in India.

Their campaign opened with a 4-1 defeat to India and included a 5-2 hammering by England, plus further defeats by South Africa and Australia, before the defeat to Canada in the play-off for 11th/12th place completed their humiliating fall from grace.

The news leaves Pakistani hockey in complete disarray ahead of the Champions Trophy, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games later this year.

In wielding the axe in such spectacular fashion, perhaps the Pakistan Hockey Federation were seeking to outdo their cricket counterparts.

On Wednesday, the PCB dished out indefinite bans to star batsmen Mohammad Yousuf and Younus Khan, blaming them for "infighting which... brought down the whole team" during their disastrous recent tour of Australia.

For good measure, seamer Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and former captain Shoaib Malik were given one-year bans and big fines, while all-rounder Shahid Afridi was put on probation for his "shameful act" of biting the ball.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons said he was hopeful that Raqibul, who he described as an "upset kid", may be persuaded to reconsider his decision to quit the national side.

Raqibul, who was set to play in the opening Test against England in Chittagong on Friday, was angered at being dropped from the one-day squad.
