HIGHLIGHTS
While three bodies were recovered from Katra-bound bus, 42 bodies were recovered from the Manali-bound bus. One body was of a biker identified as Sunny Kumar of Jogindernagar in Mandi district. So far 23 bodies have been identified.
It is feared that death toll could increase further as during rescue operation remains of some houses have also been traced. It is being said that two HRTC buses had stopped at Kotrupi near Joginder Nagar for refreshments around midnight.
While Pathankot depot's AC bus was running on Manali-Katra, Chamba depot's bus was running on Chamba-Manali route. State government claimed that Katra bound bus was having total 8 passengers of which 3 were killed and five were rescued, Manali bound bus was packed to capacity.
Sources said that initially a big boulder fell on the Katra bound bus followed by huge landslide. The bus rolled down around 200 meters. Chamba depot's bus was completely washed away and rolled down two kms down the hill. A 250 m stretch of the road has been completely washed away and Mandi-Joginder Nagar road has been closed for traffic. Vehicles have been diverted via alternative routes.
Mandi district administration received a call around 12.24 am after which rescue teams were sent towards the spot from Mandi and Joginder Nagar. Mandi Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kadam along with other officials remained present at the spot all night. Seeing magnitude of calamity that struck the area, administration also requested for the help of army and NDRF to intensify the rescue operation.
Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh also visited Kotrupi and directed the officials to intensify the rescue and relief measures on war footing. He said that rescue operation would continue until the last body of victim was recovered.
The teams of NDRF, Army, Police and Home Guards have been deployed in the operation. Sources said that during the rescue operation, bodies recovered from headless and amputated.
