Hillary Clinton’s Pakistan ignorance
* Believes Musharraf contesting elections for parliament
By Khalid Hasan

WASHINGTON: US presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton’s knowledge of even basic facts about Pakistan has been described as “surprisingly poor” in someone who should know better after eight years in the White House and a trip to Pakistan.
According to Thomas Houlahan, director of the Military Assessment Programme at the Centre for Security and Science, Hillary had told Wolf Blitzer of CNN in an interview after Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, “If President Musharraf wishes to stand for election, then he should abide by the same rules that every other candidate will have to follow.” She obviously did not know that the upcoming elections are for the next parliament and, further, that President Musharraf has already had himself elected as president for the next five years by the national and provincial legislatures. She did not know that he is not required to run for parliament.
In a later interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, Hillary, in an answer to a question about the delay in elections in Pakistan, said, “I think it will be very difficult to have a real election. You know, Nawaz Sharif has said he’s not going to compete. The PPP is in disarray with Benazir’s assassination. He (President Pervez Musharraf) could be the only person on the ballot. I don’t think that’s a real election.”
Houlahan comments, “That hit me. Senator Clinton really didn’t know that the upcoming elections were for individual seats in Pakistan’s parliament. She actually believed that Benazir, Nawaz and Musharraf would be facing off as individual candidates for leadership of the country in the upcoming elections. Sen Clinton didn’t know that Nawaz Sharif isn’t allowed to run for office in Pakistan because of a felony conviction. She didn’t know that President Musharraf won’t be on the ballot because he’s already been elected. Clinton, a candidate for the leadership of the free world, apparently doesn’t know the first thing about the country referred to by some as ‘the most dangerous place on earth’.”

She is planning for running for US presidential elections and wishes to be next US president. She is critical of US Pakistan relations and wants policy changes and yet her personal information about Pakistan is well depicted in the interviews mentioned. Can’t Americans find someone with brains to be their president for a change?

That's not a big deal. Pakistan is just one of the many, many things Presidential candidates need to keep an eye on. If I were an American I'd have trouble keeping pace with Pakistan's unpredictable events too. Nothing is done by the book there, no procedure, no certainty.

I should remind everyone George W. Bush was asked in 1999 about the leaders of 4 countries: Chechnya, Taiwan, Pakistan and India. He was able to answer correctly only for Taiwan, and that too just the last name. Considering that he and Mushy are best buddies now, these things don't mean anything.

George W Bush had definitely not been briefed for all the questions a local TV interview fired at him on the campaign trail.

The Republican frontrunner in the United States presidential elections was subjected to a little foreign policy quiz he obviously did not enjoy.

Asked by the reporter of a Boston television station to name four international statesmen recently in the news, Mr Bush got 25% right - if you consider first names a mere luxury.

First off, Andy Hiller, political reporter for WHDH-TV in Boston, Massachusetts, wanted to know whether the potential next president of the US could name the president of Chechnya.

Mr Bush: "No, can you?"

Instead, Mr Hiller fired off his second question. "Can you name the president of Taiwan?"

Nuclear powers

Bush: "Yeah, Lee." His score so far: 50%.

But then came the crunch question: "Can you name the general who is in charge of Pakistan?"
Mr Bush needed a breather. "Wait, wait, is this 50 questions?"

Hiller: "No, it's four questions of four leaders in four hot spots, " the reporter tried to put his victim at ease.

"The new Pakistani general, he's just been elected - not elected, this guy took over office. It appears this guy is going to bring stability to the country and I think that's good news for the sub-continent," the Republican candidate offered.

Good news, but not an answer, and the interviewer insisted: "Can you name him?"

"General. I can't name the general. General" was all Mr Bush had to offer.

The reporter tried the another country in the same region, but the Indian prime minister's name did not come to George Bush either.

"The new prime minister of India is - no."

This guy sure turned out to be Bushys favorite world leader

People need to ask right questions to GWB. If anybody had asked him about the ruler of Iraq he could've got it right though I wouldn't bet on it.

I guess Hillary Clinton is much more capable and learned than her ex-president husband. her Pakistan ignorance was merely repeating that, to be an US president, you dont really have to know a thing outside United States since it's none of the americans concern. but you must pose right-minded because all the foresaid voters care.

Exactly and we also wants the same approach should be adopted by US hopefulls when they poke their nose in Pakistan's internal affairs.

They need to focuse on Amrican citizens who are paying for ills of policiy makers.
