NEW DELHI: Trains manufactured by Spanish firm Talgo may soon undertake trial runs at speeds between 160 and 200 kmph on the existing tracks on the Delhi-Mumbai route. Depending upon the results of the trial runs, the railways will consider introduction of high speed trains on other routes too, a senior Railway Ministry official said.

Talgo will conduct the time validation trial on Delhi-Mumbai corridor soon, the official said.

The Spanish train maker has offered to test run their lighter and faster trains free of cost.

"We will be issuing the permission letter to Talgo after getting the Railway Board's approval for importing the rake to India. They (Talgo) have offered to do the trial with no cost to railways," said the official.

The rake will be imported in knocked down condition and be assembled in India.

If the Talgo train runs at speeds varying between 160 and 200 kmph on the existing infrastructure without any upgrade, the travel time between the two cities is expected to be cut down to about 12 hours from the current 17 hours.

Besides reducing travel time, Talgo's lighter trains consume 30 per cent less energy which will help railways reduce their power bill.

The official said barring minor changes, there will be no need for overhauling the tracks for the trial run.

The process required for this will kick off once the approval of the Railway Ministry has been received, the official said.

"A lot will depend on the trial on Delhi-Mumbai sector and, if the test run is successful, we may consider it for some more routes also," he said.

These trains are already running in several places in Asia and the US.

Kind of short term and quick solution to improve existing plying condition of IR. Also the new bullet train will take atleast 5 yrs from here to get materialise. By 2019 if modi wants to show some improvement in railways this will be an one concrete and milestone step.

.
I think this is old news atleast by 3-4 months. This was one of the offer by Spanish firm before Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visit to India.

.
..Spain also uses the broad gauge as in India. Therefore the trials can be very quick and without much modifications to the rack.

I believe for India - High Speed Rail System is the right solution than the expensive Bullet Train.

We Indians who are used to low fare and non ticket travelling and this costly & decorative items are not feasible to our conditions

This rake is different than what japanese are offering. If trial goes successful then this rake will induted on delhi-mumbai, and delhi-kolkata route within a year with few minor changes in current signaling system.

Might be, I don't know. but this offer was made before Japan's offer.

..but the Japanese offer is for bullet train Ahmedabad- Mumbai ...This may be meter guage one , as new tracks are to be installed and re-engineering for high speed broad guage can be very costly foe Japanese.

Hello ,

1stly, the bullet train ticket will not be as expensive as it seems as it ll cater to specific section (like traders n merchants who travel often in between mumbai n ahmedabad, 2 biggest cities on west coast ).

2ndly, it ll cut short the time taken by less den half (imagine thousands of man hours saved ).

3rdly , the HUGE eco system of ancilliary industries n trained man power that will be produced not only in da above mentioned cities but all along the route.

n this project is bigger than a bullet train my dear because it will be ROLE MODEL for the IR n push (or force em) to boost the infrastructure.

Suddendly , people will start comparing rest of IR to bullet train. Imagine the situation when in school, our parents used to compare us to the topper n there used to be a urge to beat them. i hope u got my point.

I think 200kmph is a good enuf speed to start with. Bullet train is really a long shot,India needs to manage some thing with existing infra. Question is ,can we get to have it run consistent 200kmp all along the route?

@anant_s
Details about the train which Spain will be testing requested.
let me check from industry sources.
On topic: it looks like some kind of distributed power (EMU) type trains, but my doubt is how they are upgrading track and signalling infrastructure to allow such speeds.

I like the idea of High speed train as an alternative to Bullet trains

Bullet trains are costly to build and costly to operate not to mention they will be more expensive than flights from Indigo Airline or Spice Jets for longer routes

But the problem is that if High speed train is priced at the same price as AC 3rd tier
Then these trains will get filled up with the kind of people who act like filthy animals on public property

It's this reason why I don't travel by trains and prefer my car for distances below 500 Km and plane for longer routes

Bullet trains have their own place and S-HSR's have their own.
The entire network cannot be a bullet train nw. Only a few high value corridors can and should have Bullet trains.

The rest of the entire network in India should be upgraded to S-HSR.

Exactly, well I am a student and no deep pockets. So its 3a.c. for me. The really sad part is how the new educated mass conduct themselves. Last time I took Garib Rath to Delhi and its quite clean and well maintained. You have to wait less than 2 hours to see the train getting filled up with all kinds of trash. They really don't give a damm, damaging and destroying the property. It's real sad part. :-(
