High demand for tricolour in insurgency-hit Northeast

Even though the insurgent groups in the Northeast make an all out efforts every year to stymie celebrations of the two most important days for nation-- Independence Day and Republic Day -- they have failed to rob the sheen of the Indian national tricolour that has remained close to the heart of the people of this troubled region.

That is the main reason why the staff in the workshop of Khadi and Village Industries Board in Assam have to work overtime to meet the demand for tricolours of different sizes in the run up to Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations every year.

The scene is no different this year too. Women workers in the workshop at the headquarter of Assam's Khadi and Village Industries Board in Guwahati are busy in making as many tricolours as possible.

They will have to make 20,000 of those well before January 26. The board's workshop in the headquarter can produce 100 national flags per day.

One of woman workers in the workshop said till date they had made 12,000 tricolours of different sizes and out of those 3,000 had already been sold from the retail outlet at the board's headquarter.

Some of the triclours are being sold through the retail outlets of the board in different district headquarter towns of Assam.

The board makes flags from different sizes. The biggest one being 6 ft X 4 ft in size and the smallest one is a car flag. The prices range between Rs 350 to Rs 40 per piece.

An official in the board informed that on an average a women worker at the workshop can make five flags of biggest size (6'x4') per day and 50 car flags day.

People from the northeast are real patriotic Indians. They are wary of the Chinese especially after China brutally took over Tibet. The people from the seven sister states are staunchly anti-Chinese.
Indian government should give more attention to the development of this part of the country to bring them into the mainstream business environment. The northeast alone can add about 20% of the current GDP if developed properly.

The northe east states were in talks recently for many projects..IDK what went wrong ?? any news on any development progress in that region ..anyone???

.
assam has huge oil reserves. hope oil extraction takes place there. d

. .
most of the oil wells in assam and tripura are actually extensions of huge oil reserves which actually lie in bangladesh.

Now we know where to start cultivating South Asian partnerships for trade :azn:.

BTW on-topic, this is a very wrong notion that entire Northeast is hit by insurgency. The only three states that have a serious problem with insurgency these days are Nagaland, Tripura and Mizoram (Manipur weaves in and out at times). ULFA is weaker than ever and after their killing of Assamese people, they have only axed their own foot as their own support wanes. My state Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh are extremely peaceful; infact, more peaceful than Delhi and Mumbai .

Earlier there was a strong support for these people as there was no development seen. But now people here want to progress and move on from petty tribal issues. This is what these cheap little bandits calling themselves as"freedom fighters" hate. They see a threat to their last stint at power, so now they made it worse; they started targeting the same people who they claim to fight for. This made people more angry and they just moved on from supporting such trash.

This trash now only has support from our big Red neighbor while local support is minimal. I can guarantee that being an NE guy.

^^Tshering u interchanged mizoram with manipur i think.mizoram i quite cool, its manipur nagaland and tripura where the trouble is.

.
@ Tshering: completely agree with you. even nagas are joining IA. they saw respect given to shaheed capt.fe nimbusaib, an naga officer and started joining IA in big numbers. hggpq motughmmdg

some times i seriously doubt that whole north-east is a part of India in real...on an average we hear no news from that area..all we hear is about Delhi and its surroundings. The people of north-east in a way alienated and i see no effort from govt to bring these people in our mainstream.

.
This is news? They are Indians all the same, except for a minuscule minority, they are proud to be. This should be of now surprise to us, however the way our minds work and the media works we generalise and dismiss the majority because of the actions of a few.

Blame the sold-out mainstream media that is owned by UPA politicians.

.
not surprising at all
But a tight slap on faces of those who foolishly keep shouting that north eastern states don't want to remain part of india

This infact is an indication that the locals dread the Indian security forces, and want to hoist the tricolor to ward off intrusion. Happens in all insurgency infested areas.
