Chinese authorities on February 16 announced that a museum and park will be built on the ruins of an ancient capital city, Xinhua reports.

“Construction of the project will start in the first half of this year near the city of Luoyang, where over 40,000 sq metres of ruins belonging to the Xia Dynasty (2100-1600 BC) have been excavated since 1959,” said Yu Jie, head of the city’s cultural heritage bureau.

Yu said the museum, with a planned building area of 30,000 sq metres, will showcase around 40,000 items, such as excavated antiques, text and graphic documents.

The most famous piece unearthed is a 70cm-long turquoise dragon, formed from more than 2,000 pieces of turquoise.

Chinese archaeologists dubbed the artefact the “Dragon of China”, saying it was the earliest evidence of the country’s infatuation with dragons.

A cultural ruins park will also be built. It will protect and display the sites of the ancient city walls, palace, roads, as well as handcraft workshops of bronze casting and turquoise, and the sacrifice venue of the ruins.

“The park will also simulate scenes from over 3,000 years ago by landscaping and building workshops based on the discoveries,” Yu said.

Archives of Confucius's direct descendants to be published
Xinhua | Updated: 2017-02-19

Over 2,000 copies of archived records of the direct descendants of Confucius will be published over the next four years, authorities in the eastern province of Shandong said Sunday.

The archived records of "Yanshenggong", a hereditary title bestowed upon the eldest child of all direct descendants of Confucius, are published for the purpose of protection, according to the Shandong provincial bureau of cultural heritage.

The Yanshenggong was a hereditary official who coordinated commemoration ceremonies for Confucius and managed the family's internal affairs.

The Yanshenggong archives, in more than 9,000 volumes spanning 2,000 years, contain content covering politics, economics, culture and thought, according to Shandong provincial bureau of cultural heritage.

The archives are included in the Asia/Pacific Regional Register of Memory of the World, and, in China, they are classed as a protected ancient book.

Confucius (551-479 BC), an educator and philosopher, influenced generations of Chinese society. He was the first Chinese person to set up private schools that enrolled students from all walks of life. He is believed to have been born on Sept 28.

Amazing record keeping.

These are copies, I'm assuming the originals are in Taiwan?

I have not heard of it. I guess originals are also in Mainland.

I think they will make copies from the original. I often visit the museum in Academia Sinica where they keep thousand-year old documents from Mainland, but I have not seen such records been displayed.

Newly found relics help understanding of ancient city defense
2017-02-20 15:22 | Ecns.cn | Editor: Yao Lan

New findings include a city gate and well-preserved barbican-like wencheng, an enclosure for defense outside a city gate, which are expected to contribute to the understanding of defense systems used in China’s ancient cities. The relics date from the Spring and Autumn period (770 BC to 476 BC), when the area served at the capital for the Zheng and Han kingdoms. The city wall was about 20 kilometers in circumference with nearly 20 gates.

Six talented ancient Chinese women
By Agencies

Editor's note:

March 8 marks the annual International Women's Day. Around the world, women usually played an obscure role in history. They were often buried with their unknown talents and amazing tales. Yet there are still some lucky ones whose stories have been recorded.

Here are six talented ancient Chinese women who once impressed in their time, and still affect us in our time.

Li Qingzhao

Praised as the "No.1 talented woman", Li Qingzhao, a poet from the Song Dynasty (960-1279), was born in Shandong province.

She excelled at poetry and in ink painting and calligraphy. She and her husband, Zhao Mingcheng, shared an interest in collecting bronze ware and headstones carved with prose and poems. Li was most well-known for her poems, which were divided into two contrasting styles reflecting her life as a married woman and a widow. Before Zhao's death, her poems were mainly about a carefree and happy life. The keynote turned into a tragic tune after Zhao passed away.

However, Li was not a narrow-minded woman. Apart from expressing feminine feelings and experiences, she also wrote poems praising war heroes and criticizing the decayed and weak emperor and royals.

One of her most famous poems is "Born as an outstanding soul, even die as a hero among spirits".

As an example of female patriot, Li has a great effect on modern women's literature.

Cai Wenji

Cai was good not only at poetry and calligraphy, but also mathematics, astronomy, debate and music. Her masterpieces were Hu Jia Shi Ba Pai, or Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute, and Bei Feng Shi, or Indignant Poems.

As the daughter of literatus Cai Yi of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220), Cai had a very unusual life. After her first husband died, Cai was abducted by the Xiongnu tribe, an ancient group in China. She was forced to marry the tribe's Zuoxian king and gave birth to two children. Living in a totally different environment, Cai was very homesick.

Twelve years later, warlord Cao Cao, also a student of Cai Yi, rescued Cai from the Xiongnu tribe. At the age of 35, Cai was married for a third time in a union arranged by Cao to a man named Dong Si.

Ban Zhao

Ban was the first female historian in China. Her father, Ban Biao, was an historian during the Eastern Han Dynasty. She was also good at writing poems, yet only seven of her works have survived.

Ban was often invited by the emperor to teach the queen and other concubines mathematics, astronomy and poetry. She was honored as Da Gu, a title for knowledgeable and noble women.

At the age of 40, Ban finished Han Shu, or Book of Han, based on her brother's writings. A total of four people wrote the book, and Ban, as the last writer, faithfully kept the style of the first three.

Ban Zhao also wrote the famous Nv Jie, a book to teach women how to properly behave and how to deal with relationships with their husbands and husbands' relatives.

Shangguan Wan'er

Shangguan was famous for being given an important position by the only female emperor, Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty (618-907).

Despite Shangguan's grandfather, Shangguan Yi, being killed for offending Wu, she was highly praised by the female emperor for her literary talent. She served as a key secretary to Wu and was called "a female prime minister" at the time.

Shangguang changed court poetry so that it used more meaningful expressions than empty praise, and further developed her style based on her grandfather's poems.

Quan Tang Shi, or Complete Tang Poems records her 32 poems.

Su Hui

Su Hui, from the Qian Qin (351-394) was famously known for a handkerchief she made. The textile was embroidered with 841 characters that could form 7,958 poems.

This kind of puzzle-like poem is called hui wen shi, which makes use of the word order of Chinese language marked by a monosyllabic morpheme.

Named Xuan Ji Tu, the handkerchief was originally made by Su to send to her husband, Dou Tao. Su married to Dou at age 16 and the couple was separated due to Dou’s exile. Su waited for her husband to come back and would not divorce him, yet Dou had an affair with another woman.

Sad and angry, Su created the poems on a handkerchief in red, yellow, blue, white, black and purple silk thread and sent to her husband. Dou was deeply moved by the poems and felt guilty for his behavior. He broke up with the mistress and reunited with Su.

Xue Tao

At one time in China, when Xue Tao's name was mentioned, people would think of the famous Xue Tao Jian, a sort of small-size colorful writing paper.

It is recorded that Xue Tao, a talented female entertainer during the Tang Dynasty created this colored paper to write poems. During her time, writing papers were often yellow, yet Xue changed the simple color into different shades of red or green. Later, people made similar colorful paper and named them "Xue Tao Jian".

Xue talented in poetry and music, and had relationships with many well-known poets, including Bai Juyi, Liu Yuxi and Du Mu.

Her poems were not confined to those private feminine feelings and emotions; she also expressed her empathy to soldiers on the frontier.

'Kung Fu Granny' attracts world’s attention
(People's Daily Online) 16:09, March 22, 2017

FOREIGN201703221608000166163798912.jpg

A 94-year-old martial arts pro from Ningbo, Zhejiang province has successfully caught the attention of internet users around the world after her expert moves and positive attitude were chronicled by domestic and foreign media outlets.

Since starting to learn martial arts at the age of 4, Zhang Hexian, the “Kong Fu Granny,” has kept up her practice for 90 years. Intense and consistent trainings have kept the elderly woman spry and turned her into a local celebrity.

“People who are younger than I am already use walking sticks, but not me. All my physical examination results indicate that I’m in perfect condition. Training will only bring you benefits,” Zhang told Thepaper.cn

According to Zhang, the essence of martial arts is not the improvement of one's physical competence, but the cultivation of one's morals.

“Martial arts should be used for defensive purposes rather than bullying others. [Martial arts pros] are supposed to help those in need,” said Zhang. She also noted that many students who want to learn Kung Fu nowadays hope to use their skills for violence, which she cannot tolerate.

Zhang's high moral standard and superb combat skills have spurred her to challenge local bullies in her own community. Like a Chinese version of Robin Hood, she protects the weak from injustice and violence, even attacking a man who violently beat his wife.

Though her story has gone viral, Zhang still worries that there will be fewer and fewer people interested in studying martial arts, as people now “have more options for entertainment and need to spend more time earning money.”

“I am willing to share my Kung Fu with others ... I hope my combat skills will be passed down as family heirlooms, but this mission must be accomplished by younger generations,” said Zhang.
