TLDR: Some newer cars these days have removed the metal rods in doors that used to engage when you turned the key to physically unlock the door. It is a 100% electronic action that occurs when you turn the key.
So if your battery dies you are completely screwed as you can not get back in your car to pop the hood so you can jumpstart the battery.
