Hasina meeting Manmohan at UNGA in NY

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will meet her Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh on Sep 28 in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed.

Hasina is scheduled to leave for New York on Sunday.

The meeting will take place amid India’s failure to endorse the Land Boundary Agreement and its additional protocol signed during Singh’s visit to Dhaka in 2011.

New Delhi has also not kept its side of bargain to sign a treaty for an equitable share of Teesta River water.

The Awami League-led government says these could be decisive for its chances of a re-election.

Officials say unresolved issues would top the agenda during the talks when the two would discuss bilateral issues.

The ruling Awami League leaders particularly Foreign Minister Dipu Moni often terms the current bilateral relations between the two countries ‘best’ of all times.

Both India’s President and Prime Minister led visits of high-profile dignitaries to Bangladesh in the last four years. Sheikh has also visited India.

India also gave $ 800million line of credit and $ 200million grants to Bangladesh, first of its kind to any country. The two-way trade also soared due to number of steps including quota-free entrance of many Bangladeshi products to the Indian market.

But the opposition from the Trinamul Congress and the Asom Gana Parishad has prevented India’s External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid from tabling a constitutional amendment in Parliament needed to ratify the Land Boundary Agreement for swap of border enclaves.

The Teesta agreement was scheduled to be signed during Singh’s Bangladesh visit, but last-minute objection by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee postponed it.

Since then, there appears to be virtually no progress.

Hasina was invited again to visit New Delhi this year, but reports suggested that it was unlikely ahead of the national polls as there was no sign of rartifying land boundary deal or signing the Teesta treaty.

However, India’s Minority Affairs Minister K Rahman Khan during his meeting with President Mohammad Abdul Hamid on Tuesday said they would try to place it in their upcoming winter session which usually begins at the end of November.

The next general election is scheduled to be held between Oct 25 and Jan 24.

Kolkata-based ‘The Telegraph’ quoting senior Indian government officials reported that Khurshid and Bangladesh’s foreign office were coordinating to set a date when the two Prime Ministers can meet in the last week of September.

Dipu Moni at a press briefing on Thursday said the meeting was yet to be finalised. “Once set, we will let you know,” she said.

I'm sorry but this lady needs medical attention....She first supported the idea and cleared it and suddenly when your federal gov went ahead with the deal she turned against it....how do you people deal with your foreign policies with leaders like her??
