Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday invited BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to sit for a dialogue to resolve the current political impasse of the country.

“Let’s sit. Wherever you want to sit for dialogue, we are willing to comply. But the parliament is the best place for holding talks,” the premier said while holding meeting with the grass root level leaders of Jhalakati district unit of Awami League at the Gono Bhaban in the capital.

The PM also urged the BNP to join parliament.

Hasina also thanked Khaleda for withdrawing today’s (May 2) hartal to facilitate the rescue operation in the Savar site.

She however criticised the opposition leader for bringing the false allegations of concealing dead bodies from the collapsed site.

“The government is doing its best to continue the rescue operation smoothly,” she said.

The PM also ruled out the possibility of restoring the caretaker government system, which is the main demand of the BNP, saying next general elections would be held following models of other democratic countries.

Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam said they would contact with the opposition leaders on Friday or Saturday to start the dialogue.

“We hope that we will reach a consensus over all matters to hold the next election in a free, fair and neutral manner,” Ashraf, also the LGRD and cooperatives minister, said hours after the prime minister urged the opposition leader for a dialogue on Thursday.

After inaugurating a guest house at the Officers’ Club premises in the capital, the minister said the dialogue would be held among the highest level leaderships of the two parties, if necessary.

Leaders of different political parties including Rashed Khan Menon, Anisul Islam Mahmud, and Mujahidul Islam Selim termed the prime minister’s proposal a beginning of positive change.

Main opposition BNP is ready to sit with the government if it formally invites the party to hold talks on the issue of reinstatement of the caretaker government system, a spokesman of the party said Thursday.

“Decide first what issue you want to talk about,” Shamsuzzaman Dudu, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s adviser, said at a press conference at the party’s headquarters at Nayapaltan in the capital.

The statement came hours after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina invited the main opposition for discussion to resolve various problems.

If the government has reservation about the word “caretaker government”, it can also be called “non-partisan election time government”, he said.

It is no more the issue of caretaker govt, but many other issues must be resolved in the secret and open meetings between the two rival political parties.

For example, the issues raised by the Hefazat-i-Islam. It has declared a 5th May Dhaka long march if the govt fails to fulfill its demands. A BNP-AL meeting may weaken Hefazat position. So, the talk offer may also have been targeted to split BNP from Hefazat. BNP should talk to AL in a way not to lose Hefazat support.

Another point is the trial of war criminals. A (secret) decision must be taken by these parties whereby sentences are commuted or not implemented, new verdicts remain on hold and new trials are not opened. This will ensure a continuous Jama*t support for BNP.

Issue today is not the CT govt, there must be many other points that must be discussed and resolved by the parties. But, BKZ has a shallow mind that does not allow her to think deeply. She will probably only press a one-point demand that her dear son Tareque, the thief, should be allowed to return to Dhaka without being challenged by the law authorities.
