IAF to arm maritime jaguar fighters with anti-ship missiles

New Delhi, Sept 19:

Indian Air Force is planning to arm its jaguar deep penetration strike aircraft with long range anti-ship missiles to boost its maritime warfare capability.

The force has issued the request for proposals (RFP) for induction of a number of these missiles and Boeing integrated defence systems and the French-led European consortium MBDA are among the competitors bidding for the contract.

Boeing is offering its harpoon active radar homing and low level sea-skimming missiles, while the French are in the market with their Exocet missiles.

Indian order for these missiles could be larger as the same missiles may be deployed on long range maritime reconnaissance aircraft to be acquired by the navy.

Navy has floated international tenders for purchase of eight of these advanced naval spy planes. Boeing with its new P-8 and Lockheed Martin with its P3C Orions are the main contenders for the Navy's order.

The aircraft launched AGM-84 anti-ship missiles are currently deployed on the us navy's F/A-18 Super Hornets, P-3C Orions and also few USAF B-52h bombers.

Harpoon is the only dedicated anti-ship missile in service with the US forces and recently it has also been developed into several advanced versions including the slam (stand off land attack missile) derivates for high precision attacks on land targets.

There is no brahmos aerborne version yet,and not only that it cant be fitted on to the jaguars.MKI are the platforms for Brahmos air version!!!

So brahmos is there up and running and has been i9nducted both into the army and navy,while the AF version is getting ready to be deployed on the MKIs.

The harpoons are meant for jaguars mainly as well as for other maritime planes like IL and Tu.

yes thats what i meant,the IN and IA has it.
IAF version is under development for the MKI platforms.Theharpoons are to be used on Jaguars which cannot carry the brahmos.

Listen, There is a Big Difference between a Brahmos compare to Harpoon. Fighter Aircrafts Like Jaguars cannot lift a supersonic heavy cruise missiles which Flies at nearly three times the speed of sound, the speed of a rifle bullet, and has a range of 300 km the only Fighter Aircrafts which a able to carry Brahmos is the Sukhoi-30MKI and MiG-29K(Maybe). Light Fighter Planes like Jaguars cannot lift a Heavy Cruise missile like Brahmos and they will be Shaken by the Launch


Sukhoi-30MKI equippin with Brahmos actually is still under Development and some Soirces say that the First Testing will on 2007.

Yes, Its already Deployed. The Army has received the first battalion of BrahMos coastal supersonic mobile anti-ship cruise missiles.

The supersonic cruise missile BrahMos has been inducted into our Defence forces. After a series of successful flight trials, the missile has proved its accurate performance against ship and land targets with devastating destruction capability. Indian Navy and Army have accepted the BrahMos system and paced for production of the systems. The induction process on naval ships in progressing and will start for the Army in 2007.

BrahMos missile system being the best in the class has tremendous market potential in international arena. There are countries showing considerable interest in the product. Both the Indian Russian Government will take joint decision on the countries whom the missile will be exported.

BrahMos, being a joint venture, the production is being shared by the consortium of industries from India and Russia. The Indian Armed Forces will have the superior fire power and the best cruise missile in the world, by inducting BrahMos.

India had lifted a proposal to Choose new Long range Anti-Ship Missiles for the Jaguar and the Options are-
1.Boeing - Harpoons II
2.MBDA - Excoets
3.Russia - Kayak

So, What do you Guys Think which is the Best Option for Indian Aircrafts?

the Best Option will be Exocet Block III because of its Difficult to JAM, new Guidance capability, Range is 180km.

The combat-proven Exocet is a sea-skimming, subsonic, fire-and-forget, anti-ship missile. It entered service in 1975 with the French Navy. The guidance system consists of an inertial navigation system and an active radar seeker for the terminal phase. Exocet features a 165 kg shaped charge warhead.

It is one of the most popular anti-ship missiles in the western hemisphere. More than 3,300 Exocet missiles have been produced for 33 countries.

The MM40 Block 3 is the latest, and extremely advanced, Exocet derivative featuring added coastal attack capability, while enhances the proven long range anti-ship capability of the MM40 missile.

A new propulsion system will be provided to the Bock 3 missile to extend its operational range out to 180 km. Block 3 missiles will be fully compliant with evolving vertical launch requirements.

Block 3's new airframe will feature reduced radar (RCS) and Infrared (IR) signatures as well as enhanced maneuverability allowing flight stealth conditions for increased survivability. The guidance package will combine GPS/INS and a new J-band seeker providing new attack profiles and reduced jam vulnerability. The Block 3 will be armed with a new warhead to better adapt to the coastal attack role.

The new MM40 Block 3 missile will be available in 2006. MBDA is marketing the Block 3 as an upgrade kit for retrofitting to existing MM40 missiles. The French Navy intends to upgrade currently deployed Exocet MM40 Block 2 missiles to the Block 3 standard.
