funny... ive never had a job where i got to work 8 hours. i wish!.... every job i have ever had i have worked on average 10 hours a day.. my most recent job, i worked 12 hours a day more often then not... and that didnt include the 1 hour drive it took to go to work, then another hour back!.... i hope this study actually did some study, sure the general consensus for a lot of jobs is 8 houra a day. but more n more ppl find themselves working overtime these days... if u get 8 hours day, ur damn lucky

Work long doesn't necessarily means working hard. It also depends on the stress you put into the work. Mexicans may work longer but I don't think they work harder than the three East Asian countries. I don't think any country can beat Japan and South Korea in the real work load. And it is not a surprise that both countries have a very high suicide rate. I remember I once watched a TV documentary about a Japanese employee, he was permanently brain damaged after a choke following years of hard working. He could not remember his wife and his kids' name. But when asked his company and his boss, he could tell immediately. It is a shame in Japan to get back home too earlier so even if a guy has nothing to do, he will spend hours in bars before he goes home so neighbores won't look down on him. Tons of drunks on street on a saturday morning tokyo. South Koreans are probably in the same situation, only difference is that they can drink more.

I also want to point out that long hours do not denote productivity.
Japanese and Koreans spend vast amounts of time at work but most of that time is spent surfing the web, watching videos and what not.

In Japan and Korea productivity = hours spent at work.
It's not very important what you do at work, just as long as you are there.

here you will find those who work longer, work harder... because it is usually the hard laboring jobs that are from around 7am - 5pm or so etc. and on almost every farm!,builders, plumbers, electrician the list goes on. others you will find working long hours are those in business, specially those who are supervisors or managers/owners... even though they don't do psychically demanding jobs, it is a job where stress levels are very high!.

Definitely, pressure from panelties of failures could make one's work really hard. Jobs like electricians and plumbers don't have this type of pressure. Business and some other white collar jobs from companies with high demand and hostile environment (Wallstreet traders, GE, China's Huawei, etc) are the real "hardworking" jobs.

i take it you work or want to work in those industries.. you are biased.. and actually quite off the mark!.

electricians, plumbers etc all have those pressures, one stuff up by an electrician could burn a house down, or kill people through electric shocks. Plumbers also have these pressures as what if a pipeline they connected is not sealed properly? it burst? causing millions of dollars in damages etc... they also have to worry about public opinion... if they are known to be dodgy or dont do good work, they get very little work and the business collapses, or they loose their jobs and get bad references for the future.

in australia, it is not like china, or india or other parts of asia etc... here, you are extremely culpable. you cannot even get on a shed roof that is over 2.4metres high without having to use a harness, or you face big fines, or your business being shut down... in asia... you guys dont care there, you just go there slap it up.. there is very little work safe practices as opposed to here, everything is built on worksafe practices, which not only is hassle at times, it slows the job down by at least a factor of 5 in some circumstances.if someone gets injured and you lets say, have not even had your electrical cables checked within 1 month, you can be sued, shut down etc...

long time a go(5 years or so) my friend got job in huawei in India, which gave double the salary( no other company could beat) but he chickened out because of the fear of work pressure. It seems 14 hours is considered normal there.

For me the hardest working countries are poor countries.... Example in india a worker works more then 10 hours and he sweat 5 lt sweat.... He gets just 3 dollars a day.... A taxi driver works 14 hours a day yet dont get much money.... In america most people sit in AC and works.... Be it 8 hours or 10 hours. There's difference working in 40 degree c temprature for 10 hours and in AC indoor office for 10 hours.... Hardest working people are poor people of asia....
