IslamabadFormer Pakistani Ambassador, Husain Haqqani, has strongly lashed out at Pakistani media and Dr. AQ Khan for influencing the course in Pakistan and questioned sentence awarded to Dr. Shakeel Afridi by a tribal court.
Speaking on the subject Is Al Qaeda dead? at Washington-based think-tank Foundation for Defence of Democracies along with two FDD experts Reuel Marc Gerecht and Bill Roggio, Husain Haqqani suggested that other components of Al Qaeda were not yet dead.
Ambassador Haqqani said that the biggest complication in Pakistan is the rise of a very twisted version of Pakistani nationalism unfortunately and there is a worldview being propagated in Pakistan. Turn on Pakistan news channels, the day Bin Laden was found their (Pakistani media) concern was how did the Americans find Bin Laden?.
He, however, added, I am concerned about that, too, that the Americans acted unilaterally, they should not have, it would be better if they had acted together with Pakistan. But he added that they (Americans) had their own reasons for acting unilaterally.
Criticizing the Pakistani media he said that the debate (in Pakistani media) should at least be fifty-fifty (on Bin Laden raid) half of the concern should be why Bin Laden was there and half the concern should have been why there was a unilateral strike to get him, instead of that it was all about sovereignty, sovereignty and sovereignty alone.
The national discourse in Pakistan is more anti-American than anti- Al -Qaeda and politicians and others have been affected by this national discourse.
He also said there is a total unwillingness to face issues (like nuclear proliferation.) He said that Dr. AQ Khan may have done good from Pakistani point of view in helping Pakistan nuclear technology but that doesnt give him a licence to proliferate nuclear technology and sell it. Even from Pakistani point of view he had violated Pakistani and international law, but becasue of the way he has positioned himself...you can criticise him in Pakistan, you cant question him, he is somewhow above criticism and question.
Refering to the issue of Dr. Shakeel Afridi, he said that most people would agree that cooperation with foreign entities behind the back of your own law enforcement may be a violation but question was if he actually committed a treason. If that is true why was he not given a fair trial. He criticised the move to take Dr. Shakeel,
He said Dr. Shakeel should be subjected to provincial law or federal law. He said that Daniel Pearl case is still hanging and thats why I criticise Pakistani judges. He said Americans should not be expected to resolve Pakistans own internal psychosis.
He said if two countries (Pakistan and the U.S.) drift apart the hard-liners inside Pakistan would gain strength.
