The son of former ISI chief retired Lt-Gen Hamid Gul, Abdullah Gul, on Friday claimed to have survived an attempt on his life, saying his vehicle reportedly came under fire in Islamabad.
Talking to media persons outside Safari Hospital, where the body of JUI-S chief Maulana Samiul Haq has been kept, Abdullah said armed assailants opened fire on his vehicle on the Islamabad Expressway, however, he remained unhurt in the attack.
Earlier in the day, Maulana Sami was assassinated at his residence in Rawalpindi when unidentified attackers reportedly stabbed the cleric to death when he was alone at home in the evening.
Maulana Sami, said to be around 83 years old, was the head of the Darul Uloom Haqqania seminary in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Akora Khattak.
He remained a senator between March 1991 and March 1994. He was elected on an Islami Jamhoori Itehad ticket.
The news of his death comes at a sensitive time, with religio-political parties out on the streets protesting the Supreme Court's acquittal of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman, in a blasphemy case.
