Hamdallah: PA faces boycott threats over Hamas wages | Maan News Agency

RAMALLAH (AFP) -- The international community has threatened to boycott the Palestinian leadership if it pays the salaries of former Hamas employees in Gaza, Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah told AFP on Sunday.

In an exclusive interview, Hamdallah said he had been warned he would face problems if he visited the Gaza Strip without first regulating the problem of the salaries.

Hamdallah, who heads the Palestinian government of national consensus which took office on June 2, said the problem of the wages had turned into the main stumbling block to an intra-Palestinian reconciliation deal.

Since signing the agreement in April, Hamas has demanded the new government take responsibility for paying its 45,000 employees, some 27,000 of which are civil servants, he said. The rest are understood to be members of the Hamas police and security forces.

Before the Hamas government stepped down in June, it had been unable to pay their wages for months due to a biting economic crisis.

But Hamdallah said his government had been warned against channeling any money to anyone employed by Hamas, which is blacklisted by the US and Europe as a terror organisation.

"The government and the banks operating in the Palestinian territories were warned that if they make these payments to former Hamas government employees in Gaza then the government and the people will be boycotted," he said.

"If this happens, the Palestinian banking system will face a huge problem that will threaten the Palestinian situation in general," he told AFP.

The Palestinians are heavily dependent on international aid with a boycott likely to have a devastating financial impact on its financial viability.

Hamas' insistence on including the employees on the payroll of the new administration was "the main problem preventing the government from working in the Gaza Strip," Hamdallah said.

His remarks came a day after president Mahmoud Abbas lashed out at Hamas, blaming it for effectively running a parallel administration and preventing the consensus government from operating in Gaza.

'Stop making excuses'

In response to the Hamdallah's comments, Hamas on Sunday called on him to visit the Gaza Strip and take the responsibility his position requires.

"Hamdallah's refusal to come to Gaza because of alleged threats is an unacceptable position," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said in a statement.

Once again the disgusting Western world shows its true nature. After an devastating assault on Gaza, in which civil employees haven't gotten salaries for 5 months. The employees are under unity government responsibility. They have been trying to feed their families/get water for basic necessities. The Western is blackmailing the Palestinians(And the PA is complicit) to literally devastate the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank. Hamas recently handed out $2,000 to each family who's home was destroyed. Now, the unity government us refusing to take up its responsibilities but also the Western world is doing everything to prevent unity. While claiming to support unity or a Palestinian state. In reality these sick people have no excuse for their actions which we don't see anywhere else in the world except when it comes to the Zionists in Israel they immediately bend over for them.

Keep in mind, the cease fire deal included paying these salaries. They've already broken that. They didn't adhere to removing the blockade, it is still in place as goods coming into Gaza are very limited.

So if the struggle resumes in the near future will this evil world blame the Palestinians for it? Has this world got no humanity?

Divide and Conquer. Either the PA can keep obeying outsiders with no connection to their homeland or they can grow some balls and spend their money according to their OWN wishes. Weakness of the highest degree. :disagree:

The problem is the leadership in Jordan/Egypt/KSA encourage this. Israel has not abided by the most major agreement in the truce which is removal of land blockade. Now, we also see they refused to abide by agreement where salaries get paid. The Western world treats this like a game. These 'civilized' states view the Palestinians worse than animals that should suffer. The whole truce deal was a scam like always. If there isn't a revolution in the EU soon then this barbaric policy will always continue. These EU states understand nothing besides devastating nuclear strikes wiping out that barbaric 'civilization' from earth. These people along with the Americans are the biggest threat to humanity/morality.

They only understand language of force, they have the power to destroy international agreements. Israel has broke the truce deal. Yet, they don't care since they have the military might to enforce what they want. The Arab world also doesn't care because the monarchies in the Arab world are installed by the West. And you wonder why we get so many 'extremist' groups popping up in this region.

Europeans need to stop making the excuse that the Jewish establishment in their states is far too powerful. They must act against this Jewish Establishment which causes misery to billions of people.

Iran must send some Moolah to keep the warriors motivated enough to fight a religious war !!!

@WebMaster @Chak Bamu

This is what I'm talking about sir. We always have these people wrecking every thread related to the Palestinians. Immediately ban these people who have zero knowledge on the subject. People who commit aggression against the oppressed. Don't tolerate what they call their 'morals'.

israel will be finished the torture they ve given to innocents

i pray for hamas mujahideen to protect falestinee brothers and sisters

Weren't most of the funds supposed to come from Arab countries???....if they are demanding this than its just sad

More mentally disturbed Indians trolling threads. Just what we need.

The PA gets its funds from the Arab world. But, since January it has been only getting 1/3 of the expected funds. Hamas-PA formed unity government months ago. This required Hamas to close its government institutions and the Unity government take responsibility for Gaza/WestBank. The PA also gets more political power this way. But, now they are rejecting their responsibility. They did this in the first place to show their power to Hamas. Now, they still want the Palestinian people to suffer for electing Hamas all in coordination with Israel.

what's wrong in what I said? Westerners and Arabs aren't giving you enough money, I guess only Iran is left to provide for the salaries.

Westerners don't give us money toilet cleaner. Westerners prevent transfers of money/freeze money of the Palestinian Authority whenever they feel like it. The Westerners that give the PA in the West Bank money do so to exercise leverage. So whenever the PA says it will ask for UN recognition, or take the settlements issue to the UN. Or demand a timeline for the Israeli occupation's end, the Western world says no, not so fast. You must accept Israeli occupation or your government will collapse.

And you know this better than we do, but again your anti-Muslim sentiment pollutes your brain.

What about funding from Qatar...will that be enough to sustain Hamas???

Who cares what Jordan, Egypt or KSA thinks. Only Palestinians can determine what THEY should do. Forget what the powers that be say. If you keep following, you will always be slaves. Free people think for themselves and do what they wish. Let them boycott Palestine for doing as they wish. Bending for them will not free Palestine. Suffering because of your exertion of self-determination will free you.

Starve and be free or eat as a slave. I would rather starve.

ranjeet get lost u filthy mushrik do u even knw israel-falestine conflict

You need to separate from the West Bank, who's festering with lowlifes. You blame the West, but it is Abbas who is cowing to the to them, he is the one threatening to take his distances from GAZA. Next time instead of sending your rockets to Sderot and Ashkelon, target Ramallah !

It wasn't supposed to be about Hamas anymore after Unity government was formed. But, for months now the unity government(Mostly consisting of Fatah in West Bank since there has been no parliamentary elections) has refused to assume responsibility over salaries. Yet, they want to assume control over Gaza. So Qatar pitched in and said they'll cover the salaries for the next few months(Thanks to them, we appreciate it).

But, Arab Banks in Gaza rejected transfer of money because the allies of Israel blackmailed those banks and told them it would come with consequences

It doesn't work that way my friend. Firstly, we Palestinians agree with your statement. The PA doesn't, because it wants to keep itself in power. It allows Jordan, Israel, Egypt to dictate our affairs and cooperates with them against every other Palestinian faction. It even allows Israel to do house-to-house 'searches' in the West Bank raiding Palestinian homes in the middle of the night. No one wants these corrupt elements of the PA in our unity government. But, they will keep finding ways to either delay elections or look for a method to make sure no other Palestinian factions can be elected. Like they did last time. When Hamas won majority seats in unity government parliament, the whole world rejected democracy and put Gaza under a siege. It will repeat itself in the West Bank as long as 'governments' of the likes of Sisi or Kind Abdullah exist.

We support unity and recent polls done confirm that Hamas/IJ will win 70% majority in 2015 elections as of most recent polling. The PA looks for every way to derail this. They try punishing Hamas/IJ/PFLP/etc.. by saying if you don't accept certain conditions there will be no unity government. So that means they will also refuse to do elections for unity government representation.

Meaning this recent statements by Abbas which I'm sure you've read are an escape route from elections. But, the West will give legitimizing PA rule in Palestine because it suits Israel's occupation. The West is very complicit.

Well then how do Palestinians expect to achieve their freedom when their leadership is corrupt? When the people who make decisions for you are only interested in power, how can they defend your interest? Show some public power and remove these incompetent morons. They will only waste your time and watch with you as Palestine dissolves into Israel.
