Israeli security forces have arrested the leader of the Hamas terror cell which kidnapped and murdered Israeli teenagers Naftali Frenkel, Eyal Yifrah and Gilad Sha'ar.

Hussam Kawasmeh, a resident of Hevron, was arrested in the Arab neighborhood of Shuafat in Jerusalem in a joint operation involving IDF forces and the Shabak (Israel Security Agency), and has admitted under interrogation to having orchestrated the kidnapping and said he received funding from Hamas officials in Gaza
. It is not clear precisely when he was detained, but news of the arrest was only released for publication on Tuesday evening.

Kawasmeh was caught in an apartment in Shuafat; he had reportedly shaven his beard off and obtained a forged passport in an attempt to flee the country to Jordan, according to security sources,

He is a close relative of Marwan Kawasmeh (30) who, along with Amar Abu-Eisha (32), is believed to have physically abducted the three teens, murdering them shortly afterwards. Both men are well-known Hamas operatives in the Hevron region, who have both spent time in Israeli prisons.

Marwan is the brother of Abdullah al-Kawasmeh, the former leader of the Hevron branch of Hamas's "military wing", the Ezzadine al-Qassam Brigades. Abdullah was killed in a shootout with elite Israeli counterterrorism police in 2003, who were hunting him for his involvement in several deadly terrorist attacks.

They are still on the run, but an extensive manhunt is still underway and security services say they are "confident" the pair will be caught soon. Their houses were demolished by the army soon after the bodies of the abducted teens were found.

Hussam, however, is believed to have masterminded the kidnapping.

A fourth suspect, Hussam Dufash, was arrested in Hevron a month ago.

According to Walla! news, Hussam Kawasmeh's brother was among more than 1,000 terrorists freed in the "Shalit Deal", and was subsequently deported to Gaza. Palestinian sources told the outlet that there was "no doubt" that Hamas's leadership - both in Gaza and abroad - were aware in advance of the order to carry out the kidnapping.

Hamas terrorists released in the Shalit deal currently operate under the control of two key figures: former Hamas "interior minister" Fathi Hamad in Gaza, and Salah Al-Arouri, a senior Hamas official based in Turkey. Israeli intelligence services had previously linked Al-Arouri to the kidnap-murder, and his house was demolished by the IDF during Operation Brother's Keeper.

Together, Hamad and Al-Arouri have reportedly coordinated dozens of terrorist attacks in Judea and Samaria.

After going missing on June 12, Eyal Yifrah, 19, and 16-year-old classmates Gilad Sha'ar and Naftali Frenkel, were declared kidnapped the next day.

Suspicion immediately fell on Hamas after intelligence pointed towards the involvement of Kawasmeh and Abu-Eisha, whose names were publicized two weeks later.

An 18-day search for the three teenagers ensued, accompanied by a crackdown on Hamas in Judea and Samaria, but the search ended in tragedy after their bodies were found in field close to the Arab village of Halhul near Hevron. They were buried side-by-side in the city of Modi'in.

The three boys are believed to have been murdered very shortly after being kidnapped; one source close to the murder investigation said a recording of a call made by one of the boys as he was being kidnaps provides crucial evidence that the murder had been pre-planned from the very start.

The source claimed the kidnappers used a silenced weapon, indicating their attempt to actually use the gun, and dressed up as religious Jews to lure the victims into their car.

Nonsense. Hamas does not even know who the supposed 'mastermind' is nor does they have any contact with such a person. Israel is fabricating another story to back track after they admitted Hamas had nothing to do with kidnapping. In the same way they lied about an Israeli soldier being captured in southern Gaza so they could break the cease fire on go on a killing rampage, killing 260 Palestinians in Rafah in less than 26 hours. Most were killed in the first hours but bodies were recovered late.

Your rhetoric/rage should not get in the way of rationality and independent observation.

. .
Read the article before you start frothing at the mouth with rage and anger. The mastermind and the rest of his helpers are know terrorists with links to hamas and were paid by hamas for the heinous deed

You sound like the only one 'frothing at the mouth with rage and anger'. Obviously your anti-Muslim sentiments cause you to invest your efforts in pro-Israel tirades.

Emotions don't translate to anything. The Israeli military is not reliable for any information. They are proven time and time again of deliberately fabricating evidence/stories.

Hamas denied any contact with the man. Under 'interrogation' anyone can be tortured to the point where they will give the interrogators what they want.

Even if we go one hundred percent by your narrative that is full of delusion, that doesn't justify anything done in the West Bank or Gaza.

Israel knew they were dead from the beginning, yet the Israeli military lied to the world about a 'search operation' which ended up with the deaths of 12 Palestinian civilians, thousands injured and dozens of homes demolished plus near a thousand political activists detained.

This again, facts prove the Israeli military is not a reliable source for information.

Israeli military can be relied upon upto a certain limit, they are answerable to their government which in turn is to its people.Criminals everywhere usually admit to their deeds under negotiation.By your logic the whole world is foolish and retarded to do that?
Keep your "anti-muslim"rants to yourself.

Did you even read my post? There are no 'rants' here. Purely factual points I put forward. If you can't respond to facts then you don't need to.

Your meaningless rhetoric is irrelevant and childish.

Maybe...but some countries don't think like that. The US would likely make millions pay for 1...Why ? Because he's an American, probably so the Israelis.

No they wouldn't, the US is in a state of war in Afghanistan and lost an important general yesterday. They didn't go and kill 1,500 civilians.

Israel is an occupying power in the West Bank. It has no right there, its civilian population transfer is illegal and atamount to colonialism.

Israel was not attacked within its borders. Israel doesn't even declare borders. You can guess why.

Because of an isolated incident by a lone cell(Even though illegal settlers are combatants) it doesn't give Israel any right according to international to do either what it did in the West Bank nor Gaza. It can choose to, but that means it would violate international law and be indicted for war crimes.

You guys are hysterical, please try to use your intelligence for once and stop making outrageous statements which have no factual basis at all.

Says the one who doesn't even read the OP article. The mastermind and his helpers have active links to hamas. He has admitted to planning and carrying out the abduction and murder of the three teens with help and financial support of hamas. It is now official.

All you present is a article with "maybe they didn't" tone when the case was still murky. Now that the mastermind has been captured and is singing like the proverbial canary,it is clear that hamas did have a hand in this. Please update yourself or stop the ostrich policy.

Read my post, I addressed that. And I refuted with Israeli testimony.

Hamas denied any contact with the man. Under 'interrogation' anyone can be tortured to the point where they will give the interrogators what they want.

In effect, the spokesman of the Israeli police, Mickey Rosenfeld (?), confirmed that, were the men linked acting on Hamas' commanders, the Israeli police would know that right away. He all but said it's impossible that Gaza's Hamas was involved.

The mastermind behind the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers in June 2014 was sentenced on Tuesday to three life terms in prison.

Hussam Kawasme, 40, was also ordered to pay the families of Eyal Yifrach, Naftali Fraenkel, and Gil-ad Shaar NIS 250,000 ($63,000) apiece in compensation for their murders.

The sentence was handed down by the Ofer military court, with some of the parents of the victims in attendance.

Avraham Fraenkel, the father of Naftali Fraenkel, spoke at the hearing, imploring the judge to give Kawasme a harsh sentence.

“Unlike a normal murder, if there is such a thing, there was another component here — 18 days passed from the murder until the bodies were found,” Fraenkel said, according to the Walla news website. “Searches, hope, despair — anguish. We all looked for them, and he knew and was silent.”

“I ask your honor for a full and comprehensive punishment, using all the means at your disposal, due to the severity of the case here,” he added.

Kawasme was convicted last week of planning and financing the kidnapping and murders of the three.

Shaar, 16, Fraenkel, 16, and Yifrach, 19, were nabbed from a hitchhiking post in the Gush Etzion region of the West Bank south of Jerusalem on June 12 and killed shortly after.

The abduction led to a massive search in the West Bank as well as a crackdown on Hamas before their bodies were found hidden in a shallow grave in a field near Hebron on June 30.

Kawasme also stands accused of trading in war equipment, obstructing justice and harboring wanted fugitives, but has not been tried on those charges yet.

Kawasme previously served six years in an Israeli prison for his involvement in Hamas terror attacks.

He was arrested on July 11 and admitted to his role in the attack. He also fingered other family members and acquaintances, officials said.

According to the Shin Bet General Security Services, the two men at the heart of planning the attack were Hussam and his brother Mahmoud Kawasme.

The latter, who lives in Gaza, was released in 2011 from a 20-year sentence in an Israeli prison for his role in a 2004 suicide attack in Beersheba and exiled, as part of the Gilad Shalit deal, to the Hamas-controlled coastal enclave.

The alleged actual perpetrators of the kidnapping and murders, Marwan Kawasme and Amer Abu Aysha, were both killed during a September arrest attempt in Hebron. Forces descended on the house where the suspects were believed to be hiding and began firing heavily on the home. They were killed after refusing to surrender.

Hussam, whom the Shin Bet had described as playing a “staff officer role” in the attack, asked his brother for, and received, NIS 220,000 ($61,000) in cash in order to fund an attack.

With the money, which was allegedly hand-delivered to Hussam’s mother in envelopes, he bought two rifles and two handguns from Adnan Zaro, 34, of Hebron, and two cars – one for the abduction and one for the escape.

After disposing of the bodies and torching the newly stolen Hyundai used for the kidnapping, the Shin Bet said Marwan Kawasme arrived at Hussam’s house and explained the complications in the plan. The two then allegedly decided to retrieve the bodies and to bury them on a plot of land that Hussam had recently purchased.

On June 30, once the bodies were found by an Israeli search team in a field outside Hebron in late June, Hussam planned to flee to Jordan with forged papers, but was arrested beforehand in the Shuafat refugee camp in East Jerusalem. Security forces destroyed Kawasme’s home in Hebron in August.

Tensions were further ratcheted up after their bodies were found and following the murder of Palestinian teenager Muhammed Abu Kdheir in an apparent revenge attack. The events contributed to the lead up to the 50-day conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

Stuart Winer and Mitch Ginsburg contributed to this report.
