HAL Statement: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) successfully carried out the maiden flight of avionics upgraded Jaguar aircraft "Darin III" here today.

"This is significant moment for HAL as the upgrade will result in major operational improvement with regard to all weather air to ground, air to sea and air to air capabilities through incorporation of multi mode radar", says Dr. R. K. Tyagi, Chairman, HAL. Darin III upgrade, with re-engining and change over to higher capacity alternators can make Jaguar one of the most potent aircraft in the arsenal of IAF with an extended life-span.

The total design from system requirement capture, specification preparation, software, hardware, electrical, mechanical design and development has been done indigenously by HAL at its Mission & Combat System Research & Design Centre (MCSRDC) and aircraft trial modification is done by HAL's Overhaul Division. The fleet compliance will also be carried out by HAL. SDI of IAF is the design partner for display software development and Aircraft System Testing Establishment (ASTE) under the leadership of Air Vice Marshal Raghunath Nambiar
takes care of system specification preparation, data analysis and flight testing along with Flight Test Centre of HAL.

The upgrade incorporates new state-of-the-art avionics architecture including Mission Computer (MC), Engine and Flight Instrument System (EFIS), Solid State Digital Video Recording System (SSDVRS), Solid State Flight Data Recorder (SSFDR) and additional functions in inertial global positioning system (INGPS), autopilot, radar and RWR. The upgrade covers modern navigation, EW and weapon delivery system with INGPS using primary and reversionary modes, state-of-the–art, man-machine interface (near glass cockpit) with two smart multifunction display and head-up display.

So now IAF will operate these aircraft till??

Will this upgrade be done on all 120+ jags??

So with the imminent retirement of the mig 21s and 27s, the IAF will be a fully fourth gen airforce. These jags will actually be the LEAST combat capable planes in our inventory.:victory:

They're targeting to upgrade 120 Jaguars to this new standard.

I'm not in favor of retiring Mig-27s just now, it can be given the role of EW/Jamming platform.

Still, we can't afford to retire that huge quantity of aircraft in such short span of time.

IAF currently has 150+ mig-21s & 100+ mig-27, Mig-21s will be retired first by 2017 & mig-27s will completely retired only beyond 2025, maybe by 2025 or so, so by 2017, we'll have 1 squad (21 ac) of Rafale, around 80 ( 4 squad) of su-30, atleast 1 squad (21 ac) of LCA, i.e. we will be inducting 1, 4+ gen. ac for each mig-21s (3+ gen) retired.

+ by 2025, when all the mig-27s will be retired, we will be inducting more than 1 ac to replace each mi-27s.

So as far as squad no. goes, IAF chief has himself said the nos. have stabilized at 34 squad. & will now only see North.

The IAF has said recently that the mig 27s will be phased out by 2016. The news was recent.

The Jag is no 4th generation fighter, since it remains a single role fighter.

I'm not in favor of retiring Mig-27s just now, it can be given the role of EW/Jamming platform.

Why would we need them for this role? We have several other fighters that could do it, if that is necessary at all since fighter avionics are improving very fast.

Still, we can't afford to retire that huge quantity of aircraft in such short span of time.

We can, since we are inducting multi role fighters on the other side. A single MKI will do the same as 1 x Mig 23 in A2A and 1 x Mig 27 in A2G. So by replacing the 200+ Mig 23/27 with the same number of MKI we doubled the A2A and A2G capability!

none of one want their retirement, but their faulty upgrade force them to retire early.
