Gulf countries pledge $US90m to Lebanon

BEIRUT: Three Gulf countries have pledged $US90 million to help Lebanon after its prime minister said Israeli attacks turned the country into a disaster area.

According to the Arab media King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has ordered the immediate transfer of $US50 million to Lebanon, while Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates have pledged $US20 million to help Lebanon after Prime Minister Fouad Siniora said Beirut needed a comprehensive plan to rush aid into the country.

Israeli attacks destroyed key infrastructure, including bridges, power stations and ports.

It took years to rebuild the war torn Beyrut and during the first 24 hours of was already 21 bridges have been destroyed.

Richer arab nations can do better that $90 million.

Had they put their foot down when America was going to attack Iraq, things would have been different now. Why is everyone quite while Israel is killing innocents in Palestine and Lebanon. It might be an over estimate as Muslims have no power. They lack in every field but they have the power of oil. Oil can be used as a weapon. Would like to remind you of the 6 day war when reduction in oil supply brought an immediate ceasefire

When during the six day war, oil was being used as a weapon, the US and other countries had already drawn up a plan to launch raids on the countries who were withholding oil and secure their oil fields to stabilize the oil supply and prices.

Since then, reliance on Middle East oil has gone down considerably. Another oil cutback will not have the same impact it did before.

I kind of a agree with SID here, One day those wells are gonna dry out, and the is not far. And that was the old time, when they used oil as weapen. Oil has also lost its impact since US has attacked Iraq and is still holding the grip in the oil market.

For all the hoopla about what an influential nation Saudi is, Spain, hell even Aust. has a far bigger economy than it. Using Oil as a weapon will destroy the little prosperity there is in the Muslim world.

Yeah its true, because saudis are fully relying on the revenue in exhange of oil. Its good that the alarms have rung in some saudi's ears, and now there are some signs of worry as they are running out of oil, because of this they've shown some interests in buying and hiring US sea ports recently, not only this they are developing their major cities to make em become tourists attentions. Dubai is the biggest example of all.
