Well after my grade 10 report card i have to select courses for next year, grade 11 which is the transition to university courses. My parents like themselves want me to either become a doctor or pharmacist. But i though am an A student in science cannot keep my interest rate in Physics and Chemistry which are vital later on. My future goals personally are to study politics, analytical sciences and economics. Please, anyone who can do so guide me of the careers in Pakistan government related to the subjetcs mentioned as my preferences. A very stressful time it is but i know you people won't let me down.:agree: :army:

Reply anticipated ASAP.

Son first tell me what do you want to do is there something in your own mind you want to become, joining GOP is actually a good thing , but dont shut the doors on you by saying that ok i will do FPSC, If I were you I would take the subjects like engg or BIO so that if I dont pass FPSC or if I do I dont like the department they are giving me I would go for engg or become a doctor. or if you like flying and dont want to join PAF join LAhore Flying Club and join PIA.
In the next 5 to 10 years PIA will not have enough pilots, All the senior pilots who were actually ex PAF are not senior Captians and are in there early 60s. So they need fresh blood and why Lahore Flying club my course mate ZAFAR CHAUDHRY bro of cecil C is running it and all his students join PIA. If you want to talk to some in FPSC , PIA, LAHOR FLYING CLUB let me know.

Sir my ambitions are to help my motherland economically and assist the government in descion making. I would study medical but as i said it's not going to make me happy. So, are there any fields i can join with the GOP?

.
Arslan,

Economics is a very interesting and dynamic field and there are good colledges and univeristies in Canada and US offering MBA and other studies.

But you have to realise that Pakistan is already producing a lot of economists and may not require your talents.

Like Sir Murad suggested, you could try engeneering coz your help will be needed in near future as the real boom is yet to come.

Do you like nuclear science or astro-physics?

.
NEO: I thought Pakistani students cannot study nuclear science or astro-physics in USA , but he can do it in UK. May be my info is incorrect because i remember in 1984-85 Ragan banned PAKISTANI STUDENT IN THESE FIELDS.
I might be wrong.

I'm unawsre of such restrictions Sir, not sure if they still apply.
I acknowledge that we were hit severly due nuclear apartheid but since we've shown our capabilities to the world in 1998 and become a front line ally in US led WoT thinks are much better for us.

I'll ask around if the Reagan restrictions are still valid.

No, nuclear sciences or astro physics for me. I detest engineering. I took a course this year that leads to it later on and it was brutal! Besides economics i also desire to become a strategist for GOP or an analyst solely for the government regarding military and strategic issues. For this i am taking law, politics and english next year.:flag:

I second that! :agree:

Well, as elders we must guide this help seeking young man. Nowadays it has become very confusing for the youth as to the which profession they should appopt.

When I was young, nobody guided me otherwise I would have done it differently.

To the young man, well, you have to outline where your interests lie and then stream line your approach. Ask yourself, HOW you would like to help out Pakistan? and WHY you think you can do help out if you choose a certain feild; in other words find your apptitude.

Are you a book worm? Are you an adventurous kind? Are you martial by Nature or Rhetoric? etc

You said that you like analytical subjects. what do you like to analysize about? Defence? Finance? Economics? Diplomacy?

in a nut shell, u gotta ask yourself alot of questions and then ask for guidence.

Neo and Muradk are correct. you gotta do some soul searchig, then maybe we can help u out.

Good Luck Soldier...:army:

Over n out

Good post GoF!
I second that too. :)

Those living in the West have many opportunities and at one point I too had to make a choice and I was lucky to be surrounded by good advisors.
Ofcource, it was upto me to make the right choice.

What country are you in now? im assuming Pakistan

1. Do all sciences and work your hardest because it will keep your options of being a doctor open because you cant become a doctor (or have very low chances) unless you do Chemistry and Biology (and a little bit of fizix). For e.g. if you decide later end of yr 12 nah i dont wana be a doct, u can easily take up economics in uni without having done it in school (i have). For god's sake dont become a pharmacist, if you want to become a doc and miss out, just do business.

2. Man how can you say that about Fizix  the only subject i did well at in school. Look man fizix is good if your thinking of doing economics past the undergrad level (and if your thinking of only doing econ. to under grad level, dont even bother, no one's gonna hire u as an economist wiht only undergrad degree).

Also another word of advice, do as much maths as you can in highschool (i dont know whether they have levels of it? do the highest level you can) coz maths becomes much harder to pick up later on when you will be stressed for time.

One thing i havent mentioned though is if you dont have the money or connections to do a business degree (economics/finance/accountancy) outside of Asia (preferable U.K./U.S./Australia maybe NZ). If your forced to study in Asia, stick to I.T. or engineering or become a doc like mum always says (day and night and day again).

3. If you can get a phd done in economics from a uni in u.s. or australia you will be sitting on $90,000 australian a year starting salary.

1. If you are serious and passionate about economics and strategy then you should try and organise after completion of highschool to go to a uni in australia or similiar nation and finishing undergrad major in economics, then do an honours year in economics and then try and get into a phd program. Within Economics itself there is a fast growing area known as game theory that trys to analyse and form a framework for political decisions and strategic interactions, in fact this is the area I am very interested in and am doing my dissertation in.

maybe you should read a few books to get a feel for it over the next holiday or break you have, three books i have in mind are Economics by McTaggart and Findlay and Parkin, Fundamental Methods of Mathematical Economics by Chiang and Games of Strategy by Dixit and Skeath. All three assume no prior knowlegde and are pretty easy reading. The first one eases you into economics basics, the second one teaches you to understand the maths behind it and the third one goes into game theory.
