The vessels can be deployed for search and rescue by day and night in coastal areas. In their secondary role, they will be capable to prosecute intruding aircraft, and lay mines in the seabed.

NEW DELHI: The public sector Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) has been awarded a ₹6,311 crore contract to build eight anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft for the Indian Navy, a statement from India’s defence ministry said on Monday.

The contract was signed by Joint Secretary & Acquisition Manager (Maritime Systems) Ravi Kant on behalf of the Ministry of Defence and S S Dogra, Director (Finance), on behalf of GRSE, in New Delhi.

The request for proposals was issued by the Indian Navy to defence public sector unit shipyards and other Indian private shipyards in April 2014, with GRSE emerging as the successful bidder for design, construction and supply of the eight craft, the statement said.

These craft are designed for a deep displacement of 750 tons, speed of 25 knots and complement of 57 and capable of full-scale subsurface surveillance of coastal waters besides coordinated anti-submarine warfare operations with aircraft, the statement said. “In addition, the vessels shall have the capability to interdict or destroy sub surface targets in coastal waters. These can also be deployed for search and Rescue by day and night in coastal areas," the statement said.

“The vessels are equipped with highly advanced state-of-the-art integrated platform management systems including Propulsion Machinery, Auxiliary Machinery, Power Generation and Distribution Machinery and Damage Control Machinery, etc. These warships will be built as per Classification Society Rules and Naval Ship Regulations and will conform to latest Marine Pollution Standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS)," the statement added.

The first of the anti-submarine vessels will be delivered within 42 months from the date of signing the contract and the remaining ships will be delivered at the rate of two per year with all deliveries completed in 84 months, the statement said.

Besides the anti-submarine vessels, the GRSE is currently manufacturing three stealth frigates, anti-submarine warfare corvettes and four survey vessels (large) for the Indian Navy, the statement said.

The GRSE has been a pioneer warship builder of the nation, having delivered the highest number of warships till date since its inception as a defence public sector undertaking in 1960. The 100 warships built by GRSE so far range from advanced frigates to anti-submarine warfare corvettes to fleet tankers and fast attack craft. The current project will further consolidate GRSE’s position as a unique shipyard with all round capability to design and build warships with state-of-the-art technology, the defence ministry statement said.
