Gripen E Walkaround at the Saab factory

The conversation is about Gripen's...

Secondly, I was referring to years ago when Pervez Musharraf had gone to Sweden back in 2004.

There is no question of selling them weapons or anything directly related to weapons,” Swedish Foreign Minister Laila Freivalds said after her talks with visiting Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf in Stockholm.

...and we haven't bought any new Saab's, but rather used ones (from Airlines).

Finally, this nonsense of 'money' has been our issue from Day 1. Whenever we're unable to get something we need, we use the 'money' card. It was the case in the past, its there today and will continue to go on.

The Saab Saab Eyrie is not a Gripen.

We can easily have enough money to buy all the hardware we need if development funds are not squandered, non-tax paying traders and feudals are brought under the FBR net and those who have looted billions of USD are forced, under threat of death, to return the funds.

One of the worst things about Pakistan Politics is that we failed to have good diplomatic relations with countries like Sweden - where Indian lobbying is been far superior.

Sure the Thunder-program has finally kicked off, but imagine the Gripen in the PAF inducted years ago.

On a lighter note, there is proposal for a Gripen EW: ‘Growler’ variant of the Gripen F.
One of the worst thing about your post is you simply don't know why Saab denied us Gripen in first place. They were, and are, dying to sell their stuff to India. When Indians decided for French toys, I was amazed that why Indians did that, when if they were getting better deal from Saab. People were saying it was corruption, and indeed it was. But I think, it was more to blackmail Saab. I think sooner we will hear that Indians literary robbed Saab.

Why you want expensive and sanction prone Gripen E when Pakistan will soon be inducting similar capability JF-17 Block 3 at a fraction of the price?
I was not talking about the present. And if sanctions were such an issue, we would never of considered the Saab 2000's.

Obviously we've now got the JF-17 program going & the Block III might be a compliment to the Gripen. I was merely talking about the past when there was no JF-17 in the early 2000's. Had we of gone for them then, we would've had an additional 4th Gen equipment in our arsenal as opposed to F-7's & Mirages. But no point crying over spilled milk.

I'm well aware of why Saab denied it. And they can continue their wet dream of India placing an order for the Gripen's. The Gripen, like the F/A-18 isn't even in the conversation - as far as India is concerned.

The blackmail worked only because the Swedes had better relations with India & non-existing relations with us. And now they (Saab) are in a contest like bronze medalist in the Special Olympics. They aren't even in the conversation.

Still..., the Gripen is a great jet.

JF-17 programme started fully in the early 1990s and so really little need to even think of Gripen as they are similar jets.

You cannot really sanction an AWACs after it has been delivered as they do not get shot down and do not need resupply of munitions.

Its basically F-404 of GE.

It is a significant redesign of the F-404.
They made it much more reliable, especially vs birdstrikes.
Many parts were redesigned for this purpose.
A FADEC was introduced (Full Authority Digital Engine Control).
The power was increased.
The RM12 design is about 50% original, and 50% new design.

It is not a failure but mere reality that they are a bigger market of over 1.5 billion people. Imagine you are a merchant and you are forced to make a choice between a market of 220 million and 1.5 billion people which will you choose. India is a bigger country in terms of population, land mass, resources and almost everything you cam comprehend. It is not a matter of failing diplomatically but bitter reality that we cant compete with them when it comes to being a consumer market for west.

That will be true if we were talking about consumer products. In case of military hardware population doesn't count for much. Lets take example of Saudis (32mil pop), UAE (9mil pop), Qatar (2.6mil pop) & Kuwait (4mil pop) but these countries will be preferred over Pakistan because they have the money to buy in large numbers.
