Three boys aged between 10 and 12 were killed at a religious seminary in Karachi on Monday when one of them brought a grenade from the street and it exploded.

The blast, initially thought to be an attack, occurred in the impoverished western district of Orangi, which has a militant presence and a history of sectarian violence.

Senior local police official Javed Alam Odho told AFP the explosion at a religious seminary of Sunni Muslims killed at least three male students and wounded six others.

Another senior police official, Irfan Baluch, told AFP that one of the students, aged 12, had picked up a hand grenade in the street and taken it into the classroom, where it exploded.

A senior doctor at the Abbasi Shaheed hospital, Parshotum Rathore, confirmed the deaths and said the dead were aged between 10 and 12.

He put the number of injured at more than 12 and said the condition of four of those hurt was critical.

Karachi, a city of 18 million people which contributes 42 percent of Pakistan's GDP, has been plagued for years by sectarian, ethnic and political violence.
