There is two myths in Europe today :
1) French are surrender monkeys.
According to historian Niall Ferguson, France is most succesful European nation in military history, GB is second and Russia is third (thanks to Russo-Ottoman wars, where Russia lead 8-3).
2) Italians are pu$$ies.
Just Italian contribution in WW1 is good alone to beat that statement. My great grandfather on father side was soldier of Austrian army during WW1, and Italian front was one of most tough theater in whole conflict, if you really want to learn something about that, just read White War by Mark Thompson.
On the other side, the only reason of misery of Italian army during WW2 is Musolini purges of high class officers.
Actually, there is third myth too,
Russian winter - political myth coined by Westerners to justified miserably failures of Western armies (Teutonic, Swedes, French, German...) against "barbarian and primitive" Russians.
