Greece: Turkish worker arrested for crossing border

Municipal worker accidentally crossed border during construction work in Edirne province

EDIRNE, Turkey

A Turkish municipal worker was arrested in Greece on Wednesday after he accidentally crossed the border.

Recep Gurkan, the mayor of northwestern Edirne province, said the municipality had asked for a digger to construct a water well at the Pazarkule Border Gate with Greece.

Musa Alerik accidentally crossed the border while driving the digger, Gurkan said.

He was arrested in the Greek border city of Orestiada.

The necessary procedure for release of the Turkish worker has been launched, Gurkan added.

Deputy Mayor Selcuk Cakir said Alerik was trying to maneuver backwards in the buffer zone and accidentally crossed into Greek territory.

“A water well has been dug on the Turkish side. It is related to water transportation to the buildings and troops here. Our friend came here to dig a ditch, however he entered into the Greek territory instead of the customs area while trying to maneuver backwards,” Cakir added.

Edirne'de Yunanistan'a açılan Pazarkule Sınır Kapısı'nda su hattı çalışması sırasında tampon bölgeden dönmek isteyen kepçe operatörü, Yunan askerleri tarafından gözaltına alındı. Kepçe oparatörünün Edirne Belediyesi Fen İşleri Müdürlüğü'nde çalışan Musa Alerik (38) olduğu belirlendi

Edirne'den Yunanistan'a açılan Pazarkule Sınır Kapısı'nda bulunan su hattı çalışması için Edirne Belediyesi'ne ait bir kepçeyle, bugün bölgede çalışma başlatıldı. Saat 17.30 sıralarında çalışmasını tamamlayan kepçe operatörü, tampon bölgeden dönüş yapacağı sırada Yunan askerleri tarafından gözaltına alındı. Yunan askerlerinin gözaltına aldığı kepçe operatörünün, bir süre Kastanies Sınır Kapısı karakolunda tutulduktan sonra Orestiada kentine götürüldüğü öğrenildi.

Edirne Belediye Başkanı Recep Gürkan, "Belediyemizi ait bir kepçe Pazar Gümrük Kapısı'nda su hattı çalışması yapıyordu. Operatör aracı ile tampon bölgeden dönüş için manevra yaparken Yunan askerleri tarafından gözaltına alındı. Kepçe operatörümüz bırakılması için Yunanlı yetkililerle görüşmeler sürüyor" dedi.

YUNAN ASKERLERİ GÖZALTINA ALINMIŞTI

Pazarkule Sınır Kapısı'nın karşısındaki Yunanistan'ın Kastanies Sınır Kapısı karakolunda görev yapan teğmen Angelos Mitretodis ile astsubay çavuş Dimitris Kouklazis, geçen 1 Mart günü, birinci derece askeri yasak bölgeden Türkiye'ye girmiş ve gözaltına alınmışlardı. Mahkemeye sevk edilen Yunan askerleri tutuklanıp cezaevini konulmuştu.

YUNANLILAR KEPÇEYE DE EL KOYDU

Yunan askerleri tarafından tampon bölgede gözaltına alınan kepçe oparatörünün Edirne Belediyesi Fen İşleri Müdürlüğü'nde çalışan Musa Alerik (38) olduğu belirlendi. Bu arada Yunan askerleri Alerik'in kullandığı kepçeye de el koyarak kendi sınır kapılarına götürdü. Yunanlılar, Musa Alerik'in 8 metre sınırı geçtiğini iddia etti.

Edirne Belediye Başkan Vekili Selçuk Çakır, yaptığı açıklamada, "Arkadaşlar tahlihsiz bir olay yaşadık. Saat 15.30 sıralarında arkadaşımız gümrük sahasında Türkiye tarafında bir derin su kuyusu açıyor. Bu su kuyusundan gümrük sahasına askeri binaların su aktarımıyla ilgili hendek kazısı yapmak üzere işçiler çalışıyor. Makineye ihtiyaç olunca, makineyi içeri davet ediyorlar. Şoför arkadaş Türk tarafından Yunan tarafına doğru giderken, yani bizim tampon bölgemizden geçerken, Yunanistan hattını, sınırını geçti- geçmedi tartışmaları var. O noktada dönmek üzere manevra yaparken, görevliler tarafından alıkonuluyor. İş makinesine de el konuluyor. İş makinesini kendi taraflarına, gümrük sahasına geçiriyorlar. Arkadaşlarımızla aldığımız bilgiye göre Oristeada'ya götürüyorlar. Durum bundan ibaret. Ben yanlış anlaşılma zannediyorum. Bir kepçe operatörü ve kepçemiz Yunan gümrük sahasında. Misillime olup olmadığı konusunda inisiyatif kullanma şansı bende değil. Misillemi mi değil mi bilemem. Olay bu şekilde gerçekleşti. Sayın Valimiz girişimlerde bulunuyor. Kendisine bu konuda bilgi verildi. Valimizle birlikte devletimizin bütün kademeleri bilgi sahibi oldu. Kendisi süreci yönetiyor. Karşı taraftanda bu konuyla ilgili henüz bilgi gelmedi" dedi.

Very nice move by Greece just before the elections. Now, certain someone will escalate the sitiation to stir up nationalist feelings and votes....similar to what happened with Holland and Germany just before the referandum election.

Question is was the buffer zone Turkish or Greek land? If Turkish whattf are Greeks doing there, if Greek whytf are we servicing there country.

I'm not well versed enough on buffer zones but I suppose it's no ones land? Even if it was Greek land soldiers should still be present so close to the border. Greek soldiers were already there - why weren't Turkish ones?

Turkish national gets suspended sentence for crossing border



A Greek court on Thursday passed down a five-month suspended prison sentence to a Turkish man found guilty of illegal entry after crossing the border on Wednesday.

The 38-year-old was also fined 1,500 euros.

He told the Greek Police that he accidentally strayed over the border while installing irrigation pipes and did not hear the warnings of Greek soldiers due to the noise being made by the excavator he was operating.

Greek authorities confiscated the excavator and launched procedures for his deportation.

Municipal worker detained by Greece returns to Turkey

A Turkish municipal worker who was detained by Greek authorities for accidentally crossing the border has been repatriated, reports said Saturday.

The municipal worker identified as Musa Alerik was handed over to Turkish officials at the Pazarkule Border Gate following procedures in Greece, reports said, adding that Edirne Mayor Recep Gürkan and a foreign ministry official greeted him in Turkey.

Alerik told reporters that he had accidentally crossed the border and that he is very happy to be back home.

He also noted that Greek officials, including the police and the court "welcomed him like a guest" and acknowledged that he accidentally crossed the border, hence the court decided to release him.

Alerik's family also said that they are extremely happy that he is back.

Mayor Gürkan thanked the Turkish Foreign Ministry and Greek authorities for their efforts.

The 38-year-old Musa Alerik was arrested when he crossed the border by mistake while constructing a water well at the Pazarkule Border Gate with Greece.

The Greek court handed down a five-month jail term on Alerik and also fined him 1,500 euros ($1,800).

His prison sentence was suspended for three years, meaning Alerik will not have to serve jail time if the crime does not occur again within the next three years.

The court also ordered the seizure of the construction machine used by Alerik at the time of his arrest since he was unable to show documents that could prove the ownership of the vehicle.
