ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek authorities have seized a Tanzanian-flagged ship heading for Libya and carrying materials used to make explosives, the coastguard said on Wednesday.
The vessel was detected sailing near the Greek island of Crete on Saturday. Authorities found 29 containers carrying materials including ammonium nitrate, non-electric detonators and 11 empty liquefied petroleum gas tanks.

“The materials were headed to Libya,” Rear Admiral Ioannis Argiriou told reporters. He said the material could be used “for all sorts of work, from work in quarries to making bombs and acts of terrorism”.

European Union and United Nations-imposed arms embargoes have prohibited the sale, supply or transfer of arms to Libya since 2011.
According to the ship’s bill of lading, the cargo had been loaded in the Turkish ports of Mersin and Iskenderum and was destined for Djibouti and Oman.

But the coastguard said a preliminary investigation found the captain had been ordered by the vessel’s owner to sail to the Libyan city of Misrata to unload and deliver the entire cargo.
No shipping maps were found on the ship’s logbook for the Djibouti and Oman areas, the coastguard said.

The eight-member crew has been arrested and will appear before a prosecutor on Thursday.

On Thursday, the owner of the ship Andromeda told Greek media that the cargo of explosives discovered on his ship was headed to Libya for safekeeping, not for delivery.
The ship owner, Theodoros Rellos, told Greek agency AMNA that the arrests were a misunderstanding, and said his firm had a different reason for considering to send the ship to Libya.
“The ship was unable to enter the Suez Canal as it could not pay the toll,” Rellos said.
When he could not find a port where they could unload the cargo, the ship owner received an offer from Misrata Port, but he refused because of the UN arms embargo on Libya.
Later, the ship was intercepted by the Greek Coast Guard on suspicion that it was going to Libya.

At least there is no doubt about the cargo and what's its use is! My goodness.

No shipping maps were found on the ship’s logbook for the Djibouti and Oman areas, the coastguard said.

Shipping maps, navigation records, periodical longitudinal/latitudinal logging, captain's log among other logged records that most commercial ships in international waters and especially those requesting permission to enter the Suez Canal must have. It becomes very shady when much of these logs are missing, especially when carrying such dangerous cargo. There needs to be undeniable paperwork and logging to be verifiable.

What's your opinion, bro? Also @HannibalBarca

It's a bit strange, though, that they wouldn't have previous knowledge of the transit fee through the Suez Canal if that was indeed their original route, don't you think?

Well. like all intelligence agencies work in covert operations that sometimes get discovered and exposed.. but the worst part is..how many of these shipments have succeeded before?

Well... you can buy those "materials" right next door in Tunisia..with the right license... only for the non detonator...as for the ammonium nitrate, you could buy it in any agriculture warehouse... with no limited quantities... as for the empty liquefied petroleum gas tanks...well it's just an empty liquefied petroleum gas tanks (Got 2 at Home)

So as for the Q... if you could make explosives? yes you can... In Europe , Breivik used it in Norway... Few hundreds of kg... a fuel tank and a detonator...and you get yourself... Well..I let you imagine... That's why now in Europe, this component is limited...

2 Hypothesis... was he rly going to Oman/Djibouti? or Misrata? ... Well... Investigation will tell... As for the log... Actually the small Vessels... are not very "serious" about this matter...

The article don't say if 29 Containers were made entirely of ammonium nitrate or were dispersed among 29 ones... You may ask, what importance if it was... Well if you get to deliver to a "real" "Legal" owner..; it's more "truthfull" to have full containers of it... if not..; could be to hide them among "other" things... in case of being "Checked"...

Anyway... Car Bombs are rare ( very very few) in Libya nowadays... and you can buy it next door, with no restrictions...

As for those jumping on TR funding whatever groups in Libya...well... West Libya "peacefull" environment... is a condition for TR influence... Conflict and problems under Tripoli gov... is not good for Turkey... So everytime yousee an explosion/attack or whatever in West Libya... just know that Turkey is losing points and therefore influence.

As for TR giving armement "materials" to Tripoli gov... well it' snot a secret... they do... but with light things and unrestricted under embargo, like bullets and such... and she's not alone... the US/Italy/UK and France... do give too...

Turkey launches investigation of Libyan-bound ship seized by Greece
ANKARA - Anadolu Agency

Turkish officials are investigating a report that a Libyan-bound vessel which departed from Turkey was seized by the Greek Coast Guard due to it allegedly carrying explosives to Libya, Turkey’s Embassy in Tripoli announced on Jan. 12.

The embassy also stressed that the ship had permission to transport goods from Turkey to Ethiopia, not to Libya, and that Ankara has been complying scrupulously with United Nations resolutions.

“Relevant officials in the Republic of Turkey have launched the necessary investigation into the report that the Tanzania-flagged cargo vessel Andromeda was seized by the Greek Coast Guard on Jan. 7, 2018 as it was carrying materials used for making explosives from the Mersin and Iskenderun ports of Turkey to Libya,” said an embassy statement.

“According to initial findings, it was informed that the ship would go to Djibouti Port [the country Ethiopia’s sea-transported imports come into] after departing from the [Turkish Mediterranean] Port of Mersin on Nov. 23, 2017, and it was also declared that the vessel carried 419,360 kilograms [924,530 pounds] of ‘dangerous’ materials in 29 full containers,” it added.

The investigation into the documents of the ship found that “there were detonated wick, ANFO, power gel magnum, cable, electric and non-electric capsule and ammonium nitrate solution-type materials on board to be delivered to various firms in Ethiopia,” the statement said.

“The permission deemed necessary under Turkish law for these items to be exported to Ethiopia had been obtained,” it added.

“It has been determined that the ship had been loaded with static tanks, tanker trailers, and overhead static tanks from the port of Iskenderun, which was the ship’s previous stop before the port of Mersin, to be delivered to Yemen and Oman.”

The embassy stated “this preliminary data shows that the exports were done according to procedure and that the materials which departed from Turkey would not be sent to Libya.”

It added that a detailed investigation is ongoing, saying: “We require that the documents captured by the Greek authorities from the ship, as well as the statements of the crew and all other complementary documents and information, be urgently sent to Turkish authorities.”

The embassy is in close contact with the Foreign Ministry of the Libyan Government of National Accord, it said, adding that the information already gathered and to be gathered on the incident is being shared with the Libyan state and the UN.

Turkey has been complying scrupulously with the arms embargo on Libya and cooperating closely with the UN on this issue, said the statement.

The embassy also condemned some unrealistic and irresponsible remarks on the issue in social media while the issue is still under investigation and despite Turkey’s clear stance.

According to Greek media reports, on the other hand, after leavingTurkey at first the ship wanted to go through the Suez Canal in order to reach Ethiopia. But it was unable to enter the channel as it could not pay the toll.

When he could not find a port where they could unload the cargo, the Greek ship ownerwanted to evaluate a proposal from Libya's city of Misrata.

But the property owner refused the company’s recommendation. During the dispute between the ship owner and the property owner, the ship was intercepted by the Greek Coast Guard on suspicion that it was going to Libya.

The Greek authorities then seized the ship.

Here is a Libyan weapons smuggler talking about weapon smuggling to Libya from Turkey.

Anyone familiar with Libya knows which role Erdogan plays in Libya or what he is trying to do (failing badly so far like almost everywhere). What to expect from a regime that hosts wanted Egyptian terrorists and wanted MB members and other radicals in Turkey and hosts MB propaganda channels aimed at Egypt from safe heavens in Turkey.

Another article;

https://www.egypttoday.com/Article/...sed-of-delivering-weapons-to-Libyan-militants

In February 2015, Abdullah al-Thani, head of the Tobruk-based government in eastern Libya, accused Turkey of sending weapons to militias and Islamist group members who seized the Libyan capital of Tripoli in 2014.

"Turkey was not honest with us," he told Egyptian television, according to African Gate News. "It exports weapons to the Libyans to kill each other."
Trash regime. Should stop meddling in internal Arab affairs.

http://nationalinterest.org/feature/turkeys-secret-proxy-war-libya-12430

"Libya’s internationally recognized Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni accused Turkey last month of sending weapons to his Islamist rivals who seized the Libyan capital of Tripoli last year. “Turkey is a state that is not dealing honestly with us,” he told Egyptian television. “It’s exporting weapons to us so the Libyan people kill each other.”

These accusations are not new. In January, the speaker of Libya’s Parliament claimed, “Turkey still supports the terrorist militias in Libya.” In December, a prominent Benghazi-based activist claimed that Ansar al-Sharia in Libya, a faction loyal to al-Qaeda that has carried out acts of political violence against the recognized Libyan government, is partially funded by “businessmen linked by trade ties to Turkey.” Two weeks ago, the acting interior minister of the embattled government in Tobruk claimed that Turkish and Qatari aircraft are flying in and out of the Mitiga air base, which is controlled by the opposing Dawn coalition, amounting to “clear and explicit support” for terrorism in Libya."
All of the above is probably fake as the populist Erdogan is a innocent lamb that has no silly dreams of the revival of long gone failed entities and daydreams of Arabs fighting for his behalf.

He should cooler-ate with his new boyfriend Putin and his new mistresses in the Iranian Mullah's that he also engage in smuggling with despite international sanctions aimed at the terrorist regime.
