Grand Jirga of Pashtuns demands end to US-led Afghan war
A grand Jirga of Pashtuns from Afghanistan and Pakistan has been held in northwestern Pakistan where the elders demanded speeding up efforts to end more than ten years of US-led war in their region, Press TV reports.
During a two-day Qaami Jirga in city of Peshawar, Pashtuns stressed that the years-long insecurity, unrest and violence in their region have been caused by the US invasion of Afghanistan.
The gathering, which aimed at efforts for restoration of peace and security in the region, was attended by high ranking officials from northwest Pakistan, leaders of several political parties, tribal elders and delegates from Afghanistan and European countries.
The so-called war on terror has caused the lives of nearly three million Pashtuns in Pakistan and Afghanistan. This unending slaughter is still going on in both the counties. Therefore, they have gathered here to work out a solution to end more than ten years of conflict and bloodshed, veteran politician Afzal Khan Lala told Press TV.
Speakers at the Jirga also called for the withdrawal of the US-led forces from Afghanistan and unity among the Pashtuns on both side of the border and Afghans who have suffered a lot due to years of insecurity caused by the US-led invasion of their country.
Participants at the Jirga said that thousands of Pashtuns have lost their lives and many of them lost their homes in the so-called US-led war on terror, adding that the violence still continues as the war has extended to parts of Pakistan.
Scholars at the Jirga said that an everlasting peace on both sides of the Afghan border is possible only after the withdrawal of the US-led troops and an end to the US interference in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The Pashtuns also called for meaningful dialogue with the militants in Pakistan and Afghanistan to save the region from further devastation.
Urging for collective efforts through mutual trust between Pakistan and Afghanistan, leaders of different parties asked people of both countries to play a more effective role in bringing peace to the region.
