ISLAMABAD: The government is all set to waive off Rs40.2 million visa fees of 2,511 Chinese nationals working on development projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in Pakistan.

The waiver would be a one-time dispensation to Chinese nationals to change their visit visas into work visas in Pakistan free of charge.

Sources told The Express Tribune that Prime Minister Imran Khan had given a go-ahead to table the matter in the upcoming meeting of the federal cabinet for approval.

The cabinet had considered a summary submitted by the Interior Division on May 16, 2019 and granted approval in principle as a one-time dispensation to Chinese nationals to change their visit visas into work visas.

Now, the government wants to waive off multimillion-rupee fees.

Thousands of Chinese nationals are working on the CPEC and non-CPEC projects in Pakistan.

According to the policy, visas issued by missions could not be changed for any reason in Pakistan. Under the policy, Chinese nationals would get extension in their visas here instead of going back after the expiry of their visas and returning on work visas.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government had granted a one-time dispensation to 2,511 Chinese nationals in May this year.

The Chinese Embassy in Islamabad had informed that if they went back to China to get their visas changed, the construction work would get delayed.

The Chinese Embassy had requested the government of Pakistan to grant permission in principle as a one-time dispensation to Chinese nationals to change their visit visas into work visas in Pakistan free of charge. The government granted the request.

The processing fee for work visa of $25 approved by the prime minister was increased to $100 during the fifth Board of Investment (BoI) meeting held on September 1, 2016. However, as per the recent cabinet division, the visas to 2,511 Chinese citizens are to be issued free of charge.

The BoI’s processing fee for issuance of work visas is $251,000, which is equivalent to Rs40.2 million.

As per the revised visa policy shared by the Ministry of Interior, the Pakistani missions abroad were authorised to grant one year entry work visa with multiple entries to foreign expatriates on the recommendations of the BoI which was extendable on yearly basis in Pakistan.

Mandatory security clearance was to be done by the security agencies within four weeks.

The Chinese mission in Islamabad requested for early issuance of work visas to 2,511 of its citizens.

Sources told that the BoI had taken up the matter with the PM Office. The prime minister in his capacity as minister in-charge of the BoI had seen the proposal and was pleased to approve it, which was duly endorsed by the Interior Division with directions to place the matter for consideration of the cabinet in its upcoming meeting.

The cabinet would approve waiver of processing fee amounting to $251,100 in favour of 2,511 Chinese citizens as a one-time dispensation to them for working on CPEC projects in Pakistan.

Aah so if KSA reduces the visa fee for Pakistanis workers, it becomes a colony of Pakistan?

So basically GoP wants to oppress the poor by rampant indirect taxation and IMF conditions but leave out money which is legit?

What happened to PPPs idea of introducing Iqama type visas to the Chinese?

Chinese workforce can only work with Pakistani workforce if this pivotal project is to be completed.

Where are the 10 Million Jobs promised by this government?

1. Reducing Visa fees by KSA ( they are already charging heavily) and waiving off visa fee by Pak are two different things
2. Let's not talk about KSA. Talk about Pakistan. Govt. increased charges for Hajj / Umrah for Pakistanis because of financial crisis but waives off visa fee for Chinese. Why?
3. Now these "2 takky k Chinese" will not only get free visas but then they demand security in Pakistan. They will enjoy free security. I have watched chinese labour ( not some engineers) getting protocol like minsiters. I have seen Chinese workers making videos of those areas where sign boards are asking even Pakistanis not to do so. Security personnels cant even stop them because they are Chinese. That shows how much protocol they get here.
3. CPEC projects contacts are being given to Chinese companies. Labour is mostly Chinese. Gwadar Port is being declared as tax free. How will Paakistan earn the revenue
4. And in last, want to say that sometimes, by listening the truth, one's *** can burn. Is your a.s.s burning?

What can we expect from you guys?..who either lie or are totally incapable of reading properly. The article says that they will be given the work visa... Do you even know what does it mean?
And talking about the tax free and stuff.. Do you know how China attracted investment from all over the world? Just google it because I got no time to spoon feed idiots and morons. If you want to be treated like West and Europe, then achieve that level first. Pakistan lacks skilled labour and it will take time before we enough of our people ready to do the job.
BTW, all your complaints should be directed to your corrupt cult leader who not only signed those agreements, he also took kickbacks and cuts for his own coffers. If PMLn wanted, it could have invested in labour skill development programs but it did not because they had anti-Pakistan agenda.

Well said. This move is commendable.

Everything is Chinese what/ how are we earning to pay the Chinese back when they are already shipping money back go themselves?

Work force is Chinese. ...projects given go Chinese contractors ....Their visa is free...protocol free...sounds very much like British East India company!

But what about putting the incoming chinese workers under an appropriate vetting process so that we don't get criminals and prisoners from china coming into Pakistan under the garb of "chinese workers" and we know this has been happening for quite some time now. Pakistan government needs to have a vetting process in place so that only "genuine" civilized workers come from china to work on CPEC projects in Pakistan and not some criminals/prisoners and other such POS.

It indeed is even worse than British East india company because the company still employed mostly local workers, in case of china it is my way or the highway. Now it is a vision of a new "development model" that has been carved out for us by our great "thinkers" and "strategists" in power corridors of islamabad/rawalpindi and we have to live with it.

People tend to forget we need to pay back in billions so every million counts!

...................

Pakistan has lots of skilled labour, it is just skilled in wrong/outdated/obsolete trades, and the reason for this is our "outdated local economic structure" which still provides the relevant jobs for these skilled workers in obsolete trades, it is a vicious cycle. The change has to come from the top where a "new modern local economic structure" is installed according to 21st century manufacturing and logistic practices which will then force the change the trades of expertise of the existing and future skilled workers in that new economic model.
