Govt refuses to reveal details of foreign gifts given to PM Imran

I have a poem dedicated to these people titled: patwari hoon aql se aari hoon. which I am prohibited from posting here. tried twice but some keen-eyed mod deletes it as an insult.

slanderous karkunaan e league can post any crap but mocking them is against the PDF rules. trolling/post of no value/insulted another member/other rules. when he can't find an excuse to delete a post he uses the all encompassing "other rules"
Post it on your profile...

Do other governments publish lists of gifts?

If gifts are stored in national treasury and not kept outside the rules - why is there a problem?

If they are not then there needs to be a court case as with Gilani.

. .
UK does it quarterly but the patwaris aren't asking for the sake of transparency but to save their own arses

I agree. Like I said, if there is evidence of wrong doing file a police case. Gilani got done. If there is no evidence of wrong doing STFU and follow normal protocols.

Benzair still has $1 billion stashed away in a swiss account and she's dead! Imagine how much the living have stolen.

And there is fuss about some gifts?

Of course no PM is immune to criticism but what exactly do you want to criticize him for?

He receives gifts and normally deposits them in Toshakhana in accordance with law. He didn't keep them for himself although the law allows that the PM can keep them by paying 50% of the price (compared to 15% in previous governments). So, unless IK keeps something for himself, either by stealing (like Yusuf Raza) or by paying a very little amount (like Zardari and Nawaz Sharif), you can't blame/criticize IK ... Those gifts are a property of the government of Pakistan and the decision/policy of the government not to advertise or compare those gifts is understandable.
I will still wait that IK has not taken it home at 50%.
If he has, his statue of Mr. Clean will break in innumerable pieces.

Why imagine? We were told the living had stashed $200 billion abroad and that the PTI government would get it back to benefit the people. No fuss about that promise at all.

Even if he has taken anything home but in accordance with the law of the land properly following the "Government of Pakistan procedure for acceptance and disposal of gifts received by Government/Public functionaries", there is nothing wrong or 'unclean' about it.

The procedure involves:

Reporting receipt of the gift(s) and depositing it immediately in Toshakhana of the Cabinet Division. Cabinet Division then gets value of the gifts assessed from Government Sector experts in FBR as well as private sector approved appraisers. The recipient is then allowed to get back the gift from Toshakhana on payment of 50% of the value. The list of gifts that are not retained by the recipient are then circulated to all Federal Government officers and officers of the Armed Forces. The articles not purchased in two consecutive auctions by the Government servants are then disposed of to the public through sealed bids.

Antiques, gifts of intrinsic historical value and vehicles are not allowed to be retained by the recipient, nor are they to be sold / auctioned.

The procedure applies to the President/Head of 'the Government and their family members, Chairman Senate, Speaker National Assembly, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Governors of the Provinces, Members of the Federal Cabinet, Attorney General for Pakistan, Ministers of State, Deputy Chairman Senate, Deputy Speaker National Assembly, Dignitaries holding ministerial status, Members of Provincial Cabinets, Judges of Supreme Court, Chief Justice/Judges of the High Courts, Parliamentarians and other elected representatives, all Government servants (Civil and Military) as well as employees of the Government controlled corporations, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies and their spouse/dependents, members of the Provincial Governments, other members of public visiting abroad as members of official delegation.

Now, if IK is guilty of breaking any of the above rules, legal action should be taken against him. But if he is not, then he is clean and the criticism against him can be ignored and rejected as unfounded.

There have been extravagant gift before but unless there were MTCR violating missiles, high-tech spyware, 200 tons of cocaine or an extraordinarily beautiful concubine gifted I fail to see how it would compromise national security?
This will create an unnecessary media debate on a non issue ...

Transparency is important but reality is our opposition intent is just leg pulling and not transparency.

Right now core issue of Pakistan is our economy, enhancement in production capacity, inflation, job creation, current account deficit and budget deficit.

Opposition wants gov attention to be diverted to non issues so that they cannot focus on solving real issues.

There is a case on Zardari and Nawaz Sharif with reference to Toshakhana.

What about this??

Yes. There were numerous stories about these gifts.

MEA (India) has time and again refused to disclose details of value of the gifts presented by PM to his foreign counterpart

Why MEA's Stand Does Not Make Any Sense

MEA’s stand on disclosure of gift-related information does not make any sense because many countries have a policy of public disclosure of the gifts given and received by their heads of state. In addition, the Government of India itself through press releases discloses the type of gifts presented to foreign dignitaries.

Type of gifts is already in the Public Domain: Refusing to reveal the type of gifts presented by the PM is silly because such information is disclosed by the government itself through various press releases.

If the disclosure of information about the value of the gifts presented by the PM affects bilateral relations, then our relations with various nations must be already in trouble. This is because many countries have a policy of public disclosure of the gifts received by their heads of state including the value & source of the gift.

For example, USA has a policy of disclosing the details (including the value) of the gifts received by federal officials including the President. According to the disclosure by US Department of State, below is the list of gifts with value presented by Indian prime ministers to the president of United States and his spouse. The data is available from 2002 to 2015.

Even the United Kingdom has a policy of public disclosure of all the gifts given and received by the Prime Minister of UK.
