Govt of India wants to end rising Haj subsidy

Its not Haj subsidy, its actually Air India subsidy. Its Air India that gets direct benefit and there is no transparency in how the subsidy is utilized, even the Haj state committees are unaware of the accounts.

There is no need to subsidise the Haj under Islamic Law as Haj is only obligatory for those who can afford it. However, the money can instead be spent on social welfare projects or even on improving facilities for easy passage of Haj pilgrims so that normal air traffic is not impacted.

This is definitely right. No need to give them special treatment. Hajj is mandatory for those can afford it.

If this move is carried out, it will also go some distance in removing the "minority appeasing" tag of the Congress. I have seen many educated Indians opposing the Congress and ending up supporting right wing parties (which is even worse) for this very reason.

Thats a narrow view of right wing parties and their supporters against Congress.

even if we accept this view then minority appeasing tag is better than minority killing tag which these right wing parties happily wear on their chest

I know it is a narrow view but one the party could have done without. And the irony of it is that the party seen as appeasers of one minority (Muslims) is known for state sponsored massacres of another minority (Sikhs).

But I agree with you, people in general would be much better off voting for the minority appeasers than minority cleansers.

This whole concept of subsidy for Hajj is un-Islamic as well as immoral. Those Muslims who are not able to make pilgrimage due to sharai reasons, that include health issues, family matters, and financial issues are not forced to go for Hajj. For all such people, there is something called 'rukhsat', that is, they don't have to perform Hajj, but they'll be rewarded by Allah for their intention (niyyat).

Now why the subsidy is un-Islamic? Because Hajj is prohibited to be performed on the money of charity. Some Scholars have even argued that Hajj must not be performed on lended money (loan). From the time of the Prophet, or from the first four Caliph's, no example can be found that people performed Hajj on the money of Bait-ul-Maal. I see it even more wrong in India or other countries where overwhelming majority is non-Muslim. To give the subsidy, government relies on tax money, and in this case, why non-Muslim's tax money be used to give subsidy to a Muslim to perform Hajj? Maybe it has been a sign of goodwill from the Indian government, but Indian Muslims must not avail this as this is not their money, and there are better uses of this money than performing Hajj.

Bal thackray to see mulayam and Co converting and going on Huj :D

Jana, why have you got into troll mode ?

Good to see that India is trying to move away from subsidies. Next should be kerosene but before that lets do something about the people below the poverty line. Ration cards for the rich should be removed as they don't pick up the food grains but use kerosene and sugar.

Indians please do something for Indian Muslims performing Hajj there in Saudi Arabia. I was feeling sorry for them in "Mina" (a place in Saudi Arabia) where due to lack of MAPS many of them were missing and simply lacking the basic services provided by other countries like Pakistan, African countries and Europe. There MAPS are like blessings in disguise where if you forget your camp consider 5-6 hours of your hajj being wasted on streets looking for camps only and then The food system is very poor and lets not talk about Toilets where they have to cue up for hours to fullfil their needs.

Pakistanis too face difficuilties in all matters but overall it is a lot better than India.

The place where Pakistani and Indian tents have been alotted is a question of concern since it is breaching the basic rules set to perform Hajj. Our both governments should take an action and find a better place in Mina so that we can perform Hajj without breaking any rule...... more than 50% of the tents have been alloted outside the boundaries of Mina and Islamically you have to stay inside MINA for the first, fourth and the fifth day of your Hajj and only go outside these boundaries to perform your religious rituals i.e. Tawaf-e-Ka'ba or Pelting Shaitan in "Jamarat".

Most indian Muslims I know have said to me that they are in favor of removing the subsidy too. They think its unnecessary political fuel to right wing parties and also islamically not correct (i forget the reason why - i think because one is supposed to do haj only when one can afford it or something like that, pls correct me if wrong).

Haj subsidy is on air travel only. You are right that it is un-islamic in true sense. There should not be any subsidy for performing Haj, as Haj is compulsaory only for them who can afford it!

Some time back it was being discussed in some Urdu news paper, that the Haj subsidy that Haj passenger get, is enough to purchase few passenger aircraft by Haj Committe of India, over a period of, say, 5 years. These aircrafts can be used for normal air services other than Haj days and would earn a handsome revenue for Haj Committee. That money will enable them to buy more aircrafts, each year or provide better services to Haj Pilgrimage. This will automatically make the subsidy as irrelevent and not required.

It is time that this scenario is explored more and made productive.

so will the UPA government stop Bethlehem subsidy ( by Andhra government) also? if they are against all such subsidies.

.
GOI should use that Money for Micro economics and give that Money as a loan to start small business that will help the poor in a long run and Taxpayers will not be on the hook for it.
