ISLAMABAD: The federal government appears to be inching closer to an all-out offensive against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its affiliates after it has given the go-ahead for ‘preemptive strikes’ against militant hideouts in the tribal areas, officials said on Tuesday.

Under the new plan that seeks to dismantle the TTP infrastructure, the army will not only conduct ‘punitive strikes’ but also act swiftly against militants if intelligence information confirms they are planning terrorist attacks, disclosed a top security official.

The official, who requested not to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue, told The Express Tribune that the civil and military leadership have now decided that the ‘state will not tolerate’ any more violence from the TTP or any other group.

“The monopoly over the use of force is with the state and there will be no compromise on the country’s security,” the official added. He said all options were still on the table but the military would now “hit back if militants do not halt their terrorist activities”.

With the approval of a new strategy, the military is expected not only to continue airstrikes but also intensify such ‘surgical strikes’ in coming weeks.

Some sources claimed that the ongoing airstrikes were in fact the start of an unannounced targeted operation against the TTP.

It is also learnt that airstrikes may lead to a ground offensive probably by the end of March or in April if the TTP refuses to announce unconditional ceasefire.

Over hundred suspected militants have been killed and several others injured so far since the military targeted militants’ strongholds in the tribal areas particularly in North Waziristan Agency. The army launched air strikes after the TTP beheaded 23 Frontier Corps personnel, who were abducted by militants in 2010.

The killings compelled the government to pull out of the fragile talks with the TTP and made it clear that the process would only resume once the militant group announces an unconditional ceasefire.

The official claimed that the recent strikes had achieved great success against the TTP because their hideouts were targeted after ‘pinpoint’ intelligence

noora's lungi has loosened, he doesn't want all out operation against taliban, because of ideological similarity with talibans and because he fears the. still noora wants peace deal but the pressure has been so immense, noora has to agree to surgical strikes..

a coward noora doesn't seem to lead pakistan, this noora is hiding in his royal palace

its noora's duty to tell the truth, in front of the nation and define what is the action plan of pakistani government now and for the future

LOL No one wants to hear from an MQM supporter since you folks have been in Power for years including that last term PPP Federal Government. Forget operation, you had absolutely no control on anything.

At least there is some policy on the table against Taliban from this Govt. Read the article. Air Strikes for now, Ground Forces in March. And its pretty obvious. Win or loose, dialogue card will have to be used one day to end battles.

PMLN unlike the previous government has a complete mandate, so you can't whine that hey we didn't get the majority so we have obstacles

why is noora not attending the parliament sessions, why does he sit inside his lahore's raiwind palace?

the terrorism also in oora's time has increased tremendously if you don't know, what ever the previous govt was doing, it were the nooras who never supported the APCs, atleast everybody is now backing nooras and they also have the advantage of majority mandate as well, they don't have to worry about political blackmailing which nooras did in past five years?

the last government cleared swat, atleast PPP didn't made deals with terrorists to not attack punjab and they can do what ever they want? atleast PPP tried to own entire Pakistan unlike nooras who doesn't care if entire pakistan goes to hell only till punjab is safe enough

when its clear that peace talks have failed nooras must have declared operation long time ago, but nisar mr bean still says that still negotiations can be done

MQM is the only party that plays the ethnic card and is the only party that had a deal with PPP to protect its murderers.

At least noora's palace is in Pakistan. Your Altaf Kalu is still living in London

Did Swat completely solve country's law and order ? No it didn't. After the Army cleared the area, your political partners failed to protect Malala Yousufzai. No operation was launched in South and North Waziristan, the hub of terrorists and the Army knew the people ruling over them cannot be trusted. They waited for someone with stronger backing.

where does even the talk about ethnic discussion came, i was talking about nooras inability to solve the taliban situation, if i had started bashing the noora, i would have taken many other issues as well, but im not inserting those discussions here

yes swat operation did solve the problem, other wise talibans would have ben sitting in islamabad, like they occupied blue area through lal mosque

noora is actually fearful partially and partially he himself endorses ttp ideology, other wise i see no reasons why noora is still doing nothing and letting things get worse

nooras fear if operation is done punjab will get the hit, and thats not what nooras want

Go Pak Fauj, we want to see an annihilation of these terrorists which would make Mongols look like a bunch of high schoolers. The nation wants you not to kill them, but cull them. The rest will be shipped across the sea to an unnamed country.

Sir do you think that is that easy those who are killed in these strikes are not mostly even members of TTP most TTP leadership has already escaped Sir and if this would have been that easy they would have done thing long ago Sir and pretty much Army itself knows these strikes and even going in with huge numbers will not end this problem Sir yes they give statements we would do this and that but those are for public consumption inside they know what the situation is so keep on bombing because with this way you are can't end TTP Government and Armed Forces both know this

This is whats exactly going to happen. @CENTCOM is in talks with Pakistan Army. They might start a surprise offensive on the Afghan side along with ANA, to help annihilate this monster for good. Pakistan Army has not unleashed its real firepower on the TTP yet, nor has NATO.

There is only one big issue IDPs.

Sir they would have done this long ago Sir these ANA jokers don't stand a chance against Taliban and Pakistan would never mess with Afghan Taliban that I can tell you for sure and as far as TTP are concerned as long as Army continues operation from 12 they becamse 50 now they will become 80 groups with no end these operations will not end anything and you have used all your weapons except nuclear sir so stop living in shadow of lies

They should also feel the heat for patronizing and siding with TTP (alias JI/JUI). If they don't want to die, they should ask TTP (alias JI/JUI) to vacate their area, and help GoP to eliminate the terrorists.

Terrorist groups hold no chance against the military might of the government, there is no such example in the history of mankind. Stop this propaganda, the nation has had enough of it. We will eliminate them, no matter what.

This is what we want, the more they get divided, the easier it becomes to control them. This is called conflict engineering and this is what exactly we are doing. Asmat Ullah Shaheen's pathetic end is testament to the fact that our strategy is working.

You have killed several of their leaders loosing leaders is not a problem for them and it never has been for these kind of organisations Pakistan is trying this policy for years still failing Sir we need radical change Sir

Indeed this is better strategy by not declaring all out war against the Tali-Bitches, the thing I which I liked in this artcile was Army will act swiftly to counter these bitches with pin point intelligence.

Pakistan was not trying anything, in fact giving these savages one chance after another to get them their act straight. Now the time has come, and we will see how far these savages will go against the military might of Pakistan. Stop spreading propaganda. This non-sense of TTP (alias JI/JUI) sympathizers is not going to demoralize us. Sooner or later, we will also start an operation against TTP (alias JI/JUI) sympathizers like you. You are free to spread the propaganda while rotting in the hell.

TTP (alias JI/JUI) does not realize how much harm it has done to Islam. Now nobody wants to hear the name of Shariah, thanks to horrible representation of extremely twisted version of Shariah. People will think 100 times before accepting the Shariah where men are lashed for not having beard and lowering shalwars below the ankles, where women are enslaved in the name of burqa, and no education is allowed other than hundred years old dars e nizami. This is some excellent service you (TTP alias JI/JUI) have done to Islam.
