What's new

Govt bans new solar and wind projects in Pakistan

Will LNG still be cheaprr after 2020 when developing countries have to pay for carbon emissions?

.
Yeah that's why both Pakistan and China under the new economic corridor have initiated three new wind power projects and a large 900MW solar power project. Plus there's another solar power plant already being constructed not sure if it is joint or by GoP only but a 950MW solar power plant.

Even if the funding is not Chinese, the project will for sure use Chinese PV Panels.

Yes Chinese projects, undertaken by Chinese companies, using Chinese workers using Chinese machinery and equipment, all other companies (foreign and Pakistani ones) essentially blocked out by imposing bans on any further projects.

Umm...

Chinese Project? Yes, it is called an investment because of that reason.

Chinese company? Most of the core substance will be. But not everything. They will need to acquire a lot of material from the local material that can be acquired.

Chinese workers? The times have long gone past. Yes, there will be Chinese managers,, but most of the workers will be Pakistanis. There was a recent study, where it was found, that around 1/6 of the workers are Chinese in African countries. So for a lot of unskilled and semi skilled work Pakistanis will be hired, and trained --- remember, Chinese wages are WAY higher and anyways they don't like living in foreign lands.

Also, frankly, it is better to rely on Chinese expertise for building initial projects till a time that workers can be trained.

Chinese machinery and Equipment? Dude, Chinese equipment is used all over the world, even in countries that actually make them, and here, Pakistan doesn't even make them!

Also, you are ignoring the secondary benefits of better infrastructure and energy!

Frankly, if China demands Pakistan that no Pakistani material or worker be used for the energy projects, it will be still very useful because the presence of reliable energy itself will be a force multiplier.

For eg. China's wages are as much as 6 times higher than Pakistan, and 4 times higher than India's.
Yet, China exports 35% of ALL TEXTILE in the world! And for now the share is only going up. That is due to better infrastructure, better training, and hence the productivity dividend.

Not much commission in such projects. They want coal power projects instead.
in reality coal is cheaper imported or local no doubt about it. the only thing that beats everything is HYDRO
i have said before govt should allow these projects but more rational tariff than 4 years return rate.
solar is expensive but wind power tariff stands at 13 rs for first three years and 10 cents after that which is only slightly expensive that imported coal.
in india they offer a tarrif of 5-6rs to wind(10-12 PKR) which makes it a more manageable tariff

I feel you've good observation of surroundings...:p:

From the world perspective Chinese labour have come to the BREAK EVEN point, So Chinese Economy will suffer a slowdown as Predicted by world Economists, and India will definately replace China in Growth bcoz india have great availability of cheap labour......So the best available option for chinese Gov(right now) is to "RELOCATE" its industries in Foreign land (in near future) where they can maintain their Growth momentum
.
My 2nd Point is ....
.
Right now iam unable to present Accurate figures but for Every Product produced in China/Japan is AFFORDABLE to the world......But they encompass 20% - 40% of extra charges of "Freight inwards/outwards" of Raw Materials Plus Oil expenses...Moreover Huge Transportation involved in taking the product from industry to end user
.
So If country like China/Japan prefer to relocate their industry in PAKISTAN....then they can enjoy both benefits like

a) easy access to OIL Rich Neighbours (uninterupted & Short distance supply)

b) Freight In/Out - Less Traveling Cost involved from East to West :-)

@Jazzbot

Dont worry, the article is misleading. The gov hasn't banned new projects, it has decided to not build new projects until a new feasibility study can show practical results (I don't think tribune understands what "ban" means). From what i can tell the CURRENT projects regarding solar and wind (most being led by Chinese funding) are still going ahead as planned, and should be completed by the 2017 deadline. Frankly, the government has obligations it must meet, if it wants to receive Chinese funding, and as big of an idiot Nawaz can be, he wont squander this opportunity.
Exactly.

From what I understand many of the workers are local Pakistanis trained and hired for the jobs, and Chinese companies have sent "expert teams" to lead the construction. So you're wrong to suggest it will only be Chinese workers. As for Chinese machinery? So what, Chinese heavy machinery is already used by Pakistani companies and companies all over the world, nothing new.

Also I am still not convinced the news is verified because only one source is reporting this, none of the other Pakistani news networks have reported this. Not to mention as one member mentioned the article is misleading because there is no ban in place, just a halt on building new solar power plants by the GoP until a new Government energy report is done.

Besides, even if the news is true (which is doubtful) this Government's suspensions prohibits federal funding for new solar power plants that too temporarily until a new energy report is done, it would not prohibit private Pakistani energy companies from developing their own. Nor would it prohibit provincial governments from developing their own.

Until further notice. That means it's temporary.

Okay I hate to be the voice of reason here but renewable energy is not dependable year round and the output is hardly near the declared amount. As much as the world needs to move towards a better mix, our mix is already quite environmentally viable. The amount of energy required by Pakistan needs to be fulfilled by dependable energy sources until the load shedding nonsense is taken care off.
But this money pinching should have been thought of when they wanted to remake roads in rural areas rather then dams.
Do not know who advices these guys but laptops and cars instead of dams and healthcare...

Unlike Europe, sun shines almost year round on many parts of Pakistan (for instance Cholistan, Thar, many parts in Balochistan) and wind is always available on the coastline (1046 km long). I am not sure why you think solar and wind is not dependable. Having said that, yes we can harvest lots of energy from small hydroelectric power plants/turbines on various streams in KPK. Load shedding is not because the installed capacity (~15,000 MW) is not there, it is because falling apart distribution network that needs to be upgraded ASAP. Otherwise you can keep producing as much energy from multiple sources but the grid wont be able to take up all that load and distribute it.
