Govt Announces Incentives For Setting Up Private Shipping Lines in Pakistan

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs has announced multiple incentives for foreign shipping companies to set up private shipping lines and operations in Pakistan.

According to the officials, the incentives include no federal duties and taxes for the next five years.

“No Federal Taxes (direct and indirect) shall be levied to the detriment of Pakistan Resident Ship Owing Companies during the exempted period,” said the official notification issued by the ministry.

The new shipping companies, known as Pakistan Resident Ship Owning Companies, will be operated as Pakistan’s private shipping lines but will be the national flag carrier of Pakistan. Accordingly, the new company is required to be registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan.

@ghazi52 I was wondering, is it possible to establish a container line through the indus? Just like how the Germans have done with their rivers?

. .
I believe no ..... you just have to see Indus river from Sukkhar barrage onward to have the idea
I haven't seen it that is why I am asking but my whole idea was to make a canal from the Karachi up till lahore, with branches to balochistan, kpk and interior, Punjab/sindh. To provide not only irrigation but also bulk and civil transportation.

but what about before sukkar barrage region?

new silt is not going to be coming after bhasha dam and munda dam..so it might be an option atleast before the river enters the delta region below sukkar barrage?

I cant say for sure as I have not seen most of the part of Indus river downstream areas, but those areas which I have seen based on this I think in all the plain of Punjab and Sindh banks of Indus River are spread wide and does not have much depth additionally It does not have enough water which can support commercial transportation at long distances

Not even with dams/gates?
In Sindh there is no Dam only Barrages like Sukkur, kotri and Guddu barrages

There is always water in rivers coming from Kashmir to Punjab. Some one needs to build shipping lanes in that area. Due to mountains region, it’s really hard and tedious to transport stuff up there.

What if they were made deeper and less wide? It will require billions but I believe it will really boost Pakistan's economy. Something along the lines of what the Brits did in the 1800s.

Yes very true. It needs to be utilized

Touché rail would be a great boost too. Especially if there is a bullet train like system from the north to the south. Hitting every major population center on it's way. It would be cheaper for out people to use the train then to drive or fly, around the country. Now with China having developed that technology, its within Pakistan's grasp.

In the plan presented to Wapda there was a plan for a navigable canal up the length of the country called the “Grand Indus Canal”. It was part of the “Pakistan Flood Control System”. PPP and PML-N didn’t do anything with it, but PTI has been reminded of this plan, so let’s see what they will do.
