NEW DELHI: With the aim of indigenising defence equipment, the Defence Ministry has approved projects worth crores for the Indian Army, which are to be developed and manufactured by the Indian private industry. These are projects which are meant to enhance India’s combat capabilities for war and counter-terrorist operations. The end result will be stronger fighting machines in the form of infantry combat vehicles, tanks and soldiers on ground.
The army in an interaction with the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) and other private firms on August 12 in Delhi will discuss these projects, which are to be manufactured under the ‘Make’ category of acquisition of the Defence Procurement Procedure-2016. Under this category, an equipment has be developed and manufactured by an Indian vendor.
Furthermore, by the projects that were considered in the 2008-2010 to those which are likely to be discussed on August 12 one can see a gradual increase in technology level expectation from the Indian industry, which indeed is a healthy sign.
“In the past ‘Make’ projects, we wanted the private industry to manufacture equipment that are in the lower end of the technology spectrum. Now we want them to manufacture things such as third generation tank missiles. This is the confidence and the growth the army sees in the Indian industry,” said a senior government official.
The projects to be manufactured are aimed at the modernisation of the armoured vehicles, tanks, unmanned aerial vehicles, robotic surveillance equipment and “individual protection system” for the infantry soldiers.
30mm Ammunition For Infantry Fighting Vehicles
The BMP-2/2K is the mainstay of mechanised warfare. The army’s existing fleet of BMPs are in service since the 1980s. Their armament is also from the same era. The proposed 30mm cannon ammunition is for replacing the existing ammunition being fired from the BMPs. Nine lakh rounds of this ammunition is required for all the BMP-2/2Ks, according to army documents.
Armoured Fighting Vehicle Protection
A protection system of armoured fighting vehicles is a “major battle winning factor”. In relation, contemporary combat vehicles have on-board warning systems to warn the crews of impending attacks. But the existing fleet of such vehicles, the T-90 tanks, with the army don’t have these protection measures. Now, more than 3000 T-90 tanks will be equipped with the protection system at a cost of Rs 2485.50 crore, according to the army.
3rd Generation Missiles
This approved project entails the procurement of 3000 third generation missiles for the army’s T-90 and T-72 tanks. The missiles will have a range of 8 km and can be fired during day and night.
“It must have a hit probability on a standard NATO tank of more than 90 per cent,” explains the army documents.
Short Range Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
Also known as Short Range Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) it provides transparency in the battlefield. It can carry different surveillance payloads and provide real time inputs to fighting formations. The army also wants that it should have a range of 200 km.
Robotics Surveillance Platform
The footprints of terrorism has extended from jungles to urban areas. The Rashtriya Rifles- the army’s counter-terrorist units in J&K- face threats in built up areas. In this regard, the army requires a Robotics Surveillance Platform for gathering real time information before sending its troops to these areas.
Besides a camera, the platform will have a weapon delivery system such as for stun grenades.
Individual Protection System
In the light of casualties during counter-terrorist operations this project gains importance as it is for an all round protection of the soldier. The project will have a sensor based equipment, which can make health assessments. It will have a ballistic helmet that will protect the head and face as well and comprise sensors and night vision devices. It will also have ballistic body suit and shoes to protect the middle and lower parts of the body.
