Glimpse of Flyovers and Elevated expressways in Dhaka

in 3 years time Dhaka will look completely different. I hope the new airport will come in shape by then.

You really have been living in the USA for too long

You say three years? It's not that simple. Sure, some infrastructure, but no major transformation.

Dhaka has enough roads for its current motor vehicle population. However vehicles such as rickshaws, clog up the streets and cause traffic jams. Futhermore the lack of traffic lights is another problem in the streets of dhaka that contribute to the traffic jams

Traffic is pretty chaotic in Dhaka. It's overcrowded for sure.

The main problem is that nobody follows basic traffic rules. Privately owned vehicles by far account for the highest number of road accidents.

DHAKA = HELL

Decentralization is the only way. there is no other option left........

You see this is the problem with globalization. Rickshaw carries around 40+ passengers a day whereas a car carries how much? 2-8 at max. Rickshaw is pollution free, we the city dwellers are helping the underprivileged by providing decent fares. Actually a rickshaw puller earns approx $1800 a year, astonishingly. They earn enough to turn themselves from land less to land owners in villages.

Because of dhakas traffic jams, I've given up driving unless it's after 9 pm.
My recommendation is to remove rickshaws from smaller roads, transform those roads into plazas with greenery. That way people should walk between distances which takes less then 15-20 mins.

.
Removing rickshaws will not be easy because of the social reason, but also for political reasons.

Imagine the number of people who will be unemployed and its effect on the votes.

The question should be,
Why should we remove them, is it not western enough?
Are they aesthetically inferior thats why they should be dumped etc etc.

Though I do agree that the numbers can be restricted.

Thing is, Rickshaws are a pain to look at. We need some modern looking ones like these:

We should remove them because its inhuman. We should remove them because a rickshaw puller life expectancy comes down to 50s.
We should remove them because rickshaw pullers are contributing to the unproductive sector.
We should remove them because we dont live in medieaval age anymore. We need faster means of communication with ease. The days for fat ladies are over. They need to learn how to walk.

. . . .
The consume electricity...

Yeah, I guess it all comes down to energy and resources etc. Anyway, even if we have to keep the crappy Rickshaws, I wouldn't oppose it. There's simply too many Rickshaw drivers who would be left jobless (at least in my city, Bangalore).

Can't believe you stay is the US and talk so medieval.
If you want people to walk, you need proper walkways
and secondary transportations not mighty flyovers.

Agreed, but you can't just have rules and regulations so you deprive people of work. Who are you to decide that they can't be able to drive a rickshaw? Do you think it was them who decided to drive a rickshaw as their first choice? Its the minimum wage law enforced by the govt so companies don't want to higher excess people in the garments industry. Matter of fact, if you go through the main reasons for poverty in bangladesh, you will certainly find a govt rules and regulation which causes people to stay poor. What about the bus fares which are highly controlled by the govt? That's why I have always been a firm believer of freidmanomics :P
