Give me one good reason why journalists are sometimes referred to as as the fourth pillar of the state and not those municipal cleaners who keeps are towns and cities clean so that we can go to work and live in a healthy enviornment.:agree:
Who is more hardworking?Journalist or a Cleaner who wakes up everyday before dawn to clean the mess made up by cars driven and motorbikesridden by journalists and also who is under-paid out of the two?

Only if you knew how underpaid majority of journalists are then you would not have talked about this comparison

Four pillars of democracy are
Legislature
Executive
Judiciary
Press

As you can see journalists are not one of the pillars. They are part of "press".

The phrase was not, originally, the "4th pillar of the state", but the "4th estate". It is a historical accident.
The French "Ancien Regime" legally divided the people into three classes, or "Estates". The first were the clergy, the second, the nobility, and everybody else, from millionaires to the homeless, 95% plus of the people, were the 3rd Estate.
When the Revolution started and censorship was ended, there was an explosion of newspapers giving every point of view. Public discussion became so important that the journalists started referring to themselves as the "4th" Estate.
American journalist took up the term, but, with the 1st Amendment's and Jefferson's philosophical support, the media mediated misunderstanding of the term turned it from a self description of a new class of rulers (in the sense of defining the issues), along with priests and aristos, into "the fourth pillar of the state" along with the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial.
Hope this history helped answer your question. Hard work had nothing to do with it. It comes down to ability to dominate, and define.
Wa'alekum salaam.

Well, if we take our own example, the only people currently providing the checks and balances are journalists, reporters and anchors. Whether they're going about it in the right way or not for some, they are doing it.

Who else is placing the corrupt and inefficient politicians on the spot, or exposing their looting ways? Given they're meant to be providing 'governance', and can't do that in the slightest, the press / media form an important pillar indeed.

A lot was expected from the judiciary post 2007, and it's not transpired. On the other hand, the media has continued its aggressive spotlight on the ruling elite (despite threats) and if anything, that should be welcomed.

No one is downplaying the significance of the municipal cleaners, their role and contribution is valued and appreciated. However, given our current state and the need to improve governance, and strengthen institutions, the press are one of the best tools in forcing things to change.

Whether that's through raising awareness, mobilising support for an important cause, they need to be free and independent to pursue such activities.

As long as it's responsible and not reckless, we need to be thankful of their efforts - they've come a long way in 10 years.
