MP: Brothers and uncle raped, beheaded 12-year-old girl, say police

The rape and murder case of a 12-year-old Dalit girl whose beheaded body was found last week in Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district has been solved, said police.

Cops said she was kidnapped, gang-raped, and beheaded by her three brothers and uncle. Police charged her brothers, uncle, and aunt in the case. While four of the accused have been arrested, one is absconding.

The minor girl went missing on 13 March
The minor girl, a Class 6 student, reportedly went on 13 March. The next day, her body and severed head were found in a field on the outskirts of Berkhedi village in Sagar.

After her body was recovered, the police declared a cash reward of Rs. 10,000 for anyone who would provide information about the accused. The reward was later raised to Rs. 25,000.


The crime

Men murdered the girl when she threatened to tell police
According to Amit Sanghi, Superintendent of Police (Sagar), all the four men were involved in raping and murdering the 12-year-old girl.

He said they raped the girl and when she threatened to approach the police, they strangled her to death, beheaded her body, and dumped it.

Her aunt, who knew about the crime, misled cops saying a neighbor raped and killed the girl.




The neighbor named by girl's aunt was innocent

The girl's aunt named a neighbor, who was questioned by police. However, they found the neighbor was innocent. Meanwhile, the police got a tip-off that the girl's elder brother, who is about 20 years old, could be involved in her rape and murder.

According to Sanghi, the victim's elder brother was absconding; so, the police questioned his younger, 19-year-old brother, who had then confessed to committing the crime.

"It appears the elder brother had raped the victim earlier also. On that day, everyone was out for work except the elder brother and taking advantage of this he raped his sister," the police official said.

Uncle scolded her brothers initially but then raped her: Sanghi

"While (elder brother was) in the act, the other two brothers, including the minor, came and they both raped her. Meanwhile, the girl's uncle, who is in his late forties, also came by. Initially, he scolded everyone and then he too raped her," Sanghi said.
