Gilani justifies Zardari's trip with large entourage
By Syed Irfan Raza
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday justified President Asif Ali Zardaris act to take a big entourage with him on his visit to Saudi Arabia saying the president took large delegation for Umrah on his personal expenditure.
Talking to reporters at a function the prime minister said he wanted to clarify that the delegation was not taken on government expenses.
President Asif Ali Zardari went Saudi Arabia on a two-day visit on Tuesday with a big entourage of up to 200 people to seek financial assistance from Saudi leadership to bail out Pakistan from prevailing economic crisis, it is learnt.
Sources told Dawn that the Presidents delegation had flown to Saudi Arabia in three chartered flights. The advance party of the delegation arrived in Saudi Arabia on Monday.
Except few ministers and government officials the majority of entourage comprised friends and close aides of President Zardari who will perform Umrah in the holy land when the delegation were holding meetings with Saudi leadership to seek financial aid during two-day visit.
Critics were of the view that the main purpose of the visit was to get monetary assistance from the Saudi brothers but the countrys leadership has shown extravagance by taking a big entourage with them.
The sources said President Zardari had flown to Saudi Arabia in his special plane along with 15 people including his personal staff and some friends. No federal minister and senior bureaucrat were accompanying him in this flight.
The other chartered flight was carrying 175 people mostly Presidents friends and close aides. Some ministers and government official were also travelling in this plane they including Deputy Speaker National Assembly Faisal Karim Kundi, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance Sahukat Tareen, Minister for Labour and Manpower Khursheed Shah, Law Minister Farooq H Naek, Prime Ministers Adviser on Interior Rehman Malik and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Babar Awan.
It is for the first time, the state run PTV was not directed to cover the departure of the President to avoid criticism of the media on taking 200 people with him just for seeking financial help.
President Zardar's visit to Saudi Arabia was given special importance as amid severe economic crisis the country was looking towards recently constituted forum, Friends of Pakistan, after stringent conditions spelled out by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). But reports said the president could not get the desired results.
Pakistan has already sought financial help from the Friends of Pakistan, including China, the United States, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Germany, Italy, France, Japan, Australia, Turkey and Canada.
The reports said Pakistan requires around $15 billion to prevent economy crunch and during Saudi Arabias visit President Zardari will try to seek assistance for the deferred oil facility to deal with the balance of payments crisis.
