Gibraltar releases Iranian tanker Grace 1 -Gibraltar Chronicle

. . . . .
LONDON, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Gibraltar has released the Iranian tanker Grace 1, according to the Gibraltar Chronicle.

"Authorities in Gibraltar have released the Iranian supertanker Grace 1, which was seized on July 4 on suspicion it was shipping 2.1 million barrels of crude oil to Syria in breach of EU sanctions," the newspaper said.

The chief justice of Gibraltar's supreme court, Anthony Dudley, said there was no U.S. application currently before the court.

A spokesman for the Stena Impero tanker, seized by Iran last month, said the situation remained the same with the Stena Impero and that the company awaited further developments from the United Kingdom and Iran.

The U.S. government has applied to take possession of the Grace 1, an Iranian oil tanker that was detained last month by the British, according to the Gibraltar government.

"The U.S. Department of Justice has applied to seize the Grace 1 on a number of allegations which are now being considered," a spokesperson with Gibraltar's government told NPR on Thursday.

The official said the case will return to the Supreme Court of Gibraltar at 4 p.m. local time (10 a.m. ET).

The Gibraltar Chronicle reportedthat the U.S. application came just hours before the government was scheduled to release the tanker. It also reported that the Grace 1's captain and three officers were released from arrest in a separate development.

The U.S. Department of Justice did not immediately respond to NPR's request for comment.

Grace 1 was raided in waters off the coast of Gibraltar, a British territory, by Britain's Royal Marines on July 4. The tanker was impounded on suspicion of transporting oil to Syria — a breach of international sanctions against Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime

I'm sure you'll trolling but I'll reply anyway.

Iran initially wanted to back Muslim Brotherhood in Syria to take over Syria and extend Islamist rule from Iran to Gaza strip. Iran being Russia CLIENT state bought MiG-29 and Su-24 had to back Assad instead on Putin's order.
Iran supported Syria vs Islamists before Russia did.

Syria was the only Arab country to back Iran when Saddam invaded in 1980. The Syria-Iran relationship goes beyond money or convenience.

It could. At Baniyas there is refinery.
That is the whole reason the ship was seized in the first place. Iran guaranteed that the Grace 1 would not go to Baniyas in order to secure the ship's release. I strongly doubt this tanker will go to Syria.

In future Iran can still deliver oil to Syria via the same route, just don't enter EU waters (ship was likely sabotaged/tricked into entering EU waters - this was a planned operation).

@Falcon29 If you have any plans to fight Shias, join your brothers in ISIS or AQ and do it on the battlefield, not while sitting behind a monitor. Also, stop polluting this section with sectarian nonsense. Infraction issued. Next time, you will be banned for hate speech.

there is no way in hell Iran agreed to that.

the UK was willing to release the grace 1 on those terms on day 1 before Iranian counter pressure. If Iran agrees to this, it is basically saying it accepts a UK Veto on its legitimate shipping trade. completely absurd.

The UK was ready to release it because it realized it was put into a trap by Bolton. The US made last minute appeals to keep it detained. Iran responded by immidiatly arresting 2 british Iranian "acedemics" (spies). Essentially telling the UK they are ready to escalate even more.

The UK finally came to their good senses. saw what a stupid trap the US was laying for them and released the tanker.

I don't think the grace 1 will go to Syria. as Iran and the UK could have probably made an agreement to that effect to let Britain save a little face. but future Iranian shipments going thru will not be touched. guaranteed.
