Germany wins right to host Euro 2024, as Turkey loses another bidding race

UEFA’s leadership backs Germany’s tried-and-tested ability to host big events, while Turkey lose for the fourth time in the last five Euro bids.
Germany have won the right to stage the 2024 European Championship, beating Turkey in a vote by UEFA’s executive committee in Nyon.

Three-time winners of the competition, Germany hosted the event in 1988 and have also staged the 1974 and 2006 World Cups.

Berlin’s Olympic Stadium will host the final of the 24-team competition, with a total of 51 games scheduled for up to 32 days in June and July.

The nine other cities that will be used for games are Cologne, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart.

This is Turkey’s fourth defeat in the last five Euro bidding races and they had been hoping to mark the republic’s 100th anniversary in 2024 by staging their first major international football tournament.

But while Germany’s hotel stock, stadiums and transport infrastructure are all in place and of high quality, Turkey’s bid was marked down for needing to upgrade airports, railways, roads and stadiums, particularly at a time when their economy is struggling.

The country’s poor human-rights record was also flagged up by a UEFA evaluation report.

With German federation president Reinhard Grindel and the Turkish federation’s vice-chairman Servet Yardimci ineligible to vote and Denmark’s Lars-Christer Olsson unwell, the decision was made by the 17 remaining members of the UEFA ExCo.

Speaking at the announcement ceremony, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said: “They were very strong bids from two big footballing countries but unfortunately only one could win.

“The procedure was transparent and the vote was democratic and I believe every democratic decision is the right one. I can only say I’m looking forward to going to the tournament in 2024.”

Grindel and Germany’s bid ambassador Philipp Lahm made short speeches in German thanking the ExCo for their support and promising to deliver a memorable 17th edition of the tournament.

That's a shame. Germany is a great venue for a tournament, but they recently hosted the world cup. It would be nice to see a different country do it. Turkey has a great football scene, a big footballing culture, good stadiums and infrastructure; it would have been wonderful to see the Euros in Turkey.

Just like how i wanted a WC in Morroco rather than the USA. The USA had one in 94. When the WC was in South Africa, or Japan/S.Korea it added to the thrill of the occasion.

Wasn't really surprising the results. But can you imagine European fans running around with beers in Konya :) That would've been hilarious.

It's okay. Our Turkish brothers are still European no matter what anyone says!

Yes, we indeed are. Even though most Europeans are pretty butthurt about it since we have a Muslim heritage...But Turkey has been both geographically and politically part of Europe going back to Ottoman times considering Ottoman empire itself was a Balkan empire, to begin with.

The decision, however, had nothing to do with all of that. Building shiny new stadium obviously isn't enough.

Come on.... Geoghraphy or politics don't make you belong to a " culture ". Ottomans were on 3 continents so you can call them whatever empire you want. We are not a part of rotten European culture, never have been. We are just what what we are.

Germany is the biggest supreme racist country.
Take a look at how they treated Mesut Özil.
Don't forget the 2006 World Cup Bribes !!!

Turkey has always been a Eurasian country. Basically the bridge between Europe and Asia. Hence why influences are both seen in Turkey.

what drugs you use?

Lmao

Dumbass, these are numbers of Turkish nationals in Germany. What about those Turks who are German citizens and hence are not counted under foreign nationals?

There are 3-5 million Turks living in Germany (by ethnicity, not Turkish citizenship)

they would be stupid leaving UEFA for AFC... much better competition and much more money to earn for club football teams... do you realy think Galatasaray or Fenerbahce or other turkish top teams wanna miss the chance to play international games against european top clubs... or host finals of Champions league or europe league.

Remember the 2005 Champions league final of Liverpool vs Mailand played in Istambul Atatürk Stadium.

That was one of the most epic finals ever...

Do you realy belive they wanna miss that chance?

Özil spat in the face of every german... on the flag and on his shirt... he spat on every opertunaty Germany gave him... and Germany spat back on his face...and u noobs call us nazis... shame on you haters...

They did stupid things before, so why not another one.

number of ethnic turks in Germany not citizenship...

this number range from 2.8million as highest to 2.4million as lowest in the last 15 years...

there was a low in 2007 (2.4million) than the number rised sligthly over 2.5million till it dropped again to 2.4million in 2011 the number jumped to 2.9million shortly because the way of counting was changed 400.000 in Germany born with turkish parents are now counted into the number... since that peek in 2011 and 2012 the number is dropping like the other number
