Germany plans its biggest military contract ever...12 submarines for ...

SPIEGEL exclusive: Merkel wants submarine deal with Australia - PANTERES - News

"Germany competes with the Japanese. Back in November Merkel has worked on the edge of the G – 20 summit, the Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott in Brisbane for the German offer. Merkel argued here that Germany could act politically neutral, while Japan was suffering from tensions with China.’ So you’re right, ” Abbott said."

Well, Merkel is indeed a great business woman.

BTW, I predict that Germany will beat Japan to become the third largest economy by 2020.

Just like VW now is on the trend to beat Toyota.

The economic battle between Germany and Japan is just like Germany vs Argentina during the last world cup.

No, they will be build in Hamburg and Kiel.

Looks like Merkel herself pushed japan out of the water. Insiders say she approached Australian PM Abbott at last G20 meeting and told him that Japan is at conflict with China. Germany is not...

Sorry....Nihonjin1051 xD

That's just speculation. Let's see what the Aussies decide... ;) ;)

It is highly unlikely that Germany will ever beat Japan in total GDP.

The reason is that Japan has 50% more population than Germany and it will be near impossible
for higher German GDP/capita to make up the difference in population.

While Japan may be losing out in the electronics sector, expect increased defence exports to make up for at least some of the shortfall into the future

Agree, it will be difficult for Germany to overtake Japan in total GDP, since Japan has almost 2 times Germany's population, so Germany will.have to be almost 3 times as productive as Japan to have a chance of overtaking it. Germany is still more productive than Japan though, since despite having almost 1/2 of Japan's population, it still over 70% of Japans economy. So it will difficult for Germany to be over 2 times as productive as Japan IMO. Meanwhile its easier for say China or India to be half as productive as Japan (it will be a huge achievement if they can), since this will mean they will be over twice as big as the U.S economically if this was to happen.

No need to have measurement contest between Germany and Japan. We've always been allies. Through thick or thin...he he he he. Through bad and good. ;) ;)
