Calls mount for G36 assault rifle replacement | News | DW.DE | 19.04.2015
A German politician has said a replacement is needed for the highly criticized G36 assault rifle used by the Bundeswehr. The guns are inaccurate in hot temperatures.

German parliamentary Defense Committee Chairman Hans-Peter Bartels said the highly criticized G36 firearms used by the German military need to be replaced.

"The Bundeswehr needs to find a replacement for the G36, as it is operationally limiting," the SPD politician said in an interview published Sunday by German newspaper "Bild am Sonntag."

Bartels' comments come a day after German defense manufacturing company Heckler & Koch, makers of the controversial G36 assault rifle, said the machine gun was dependable and "100 percent efficient." The company's statement followed findings that the guns were ineffective in hot temperatures.

The G36's capabilities came under scrutiny after a study commissioned by German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen last year claimed "the weapons system did not fulfill the requirements."

The German army claimed in the study that the G36's precision was lower than had been previously estimated.

The weapon's capacity to hit targets fell to 30 percent when the surrounding temperature reached 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) or when the weapon became hot through constant use, the report said.

The reason for the gun's poor precision was its "complete system," the research revealed.

Greens party defense spokesperson Tobias Lindner said there could be consequences if the firearms continued to be used.

"The ministry has to repair the G36 quickly, or find a replacement," Lindner told Bild am Sonntag.

A quick solution is unlikely, however, as a complete overhaul of the 176,000 rifles in use across the Bundeswehr could take up to 10 years.

Manufacturer defends G36

Heckler & Koch chief Andreas Heeschen defended his company's weapons following the review by the German army.

"It cannot be that one discovers after 20 years that the weapon is useless," Heeschen told the German weekly "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung" (FAS) on Sunday.

The company was "naturally" ready to discuss changes in the machine gun, Heckler & Koch's Heeschen insisted, adding that the soldier was "of sole importance" to his organization.

However, one needed to take into account that general conditions for fielding the weapon had changed over the past years.

"If a single person buys a convertible, uses it for many years and then gets married and has four children, he cannot just complain to his manufacturer and say: the car is rubbish and we don't fit into it."

The CEO claimed that his company did not know exactly why the machine gun was showing problems, since the report hadn't been formally released as yet. Heeschen would also not shy away from going to court, if his company "determined that the study was not carried out according to rules."

Heeschen maintained that the G36 was in perfect condition, adding that the truth would "come to light."

Faulty rifle puts minister in crosshairs - The Local

Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen is struggling to maintain her credibility as critics have blamed her for lobbying and cover-ups within the ministry over the army's faulty G36 rifles.

Media reports on Thursday revealed that weapons manufacturer Heckler & Koch lobbied the federal Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD) to try and prevent negative reports about the G36 rifle from reaching the public. The Bundeswehr (German Army) has used the G36 rifle since 1996.

When the president of MAD Ulrich Birkenheier refused, the Bundeswehr intervened on behalf of the arms manufacturer.

In December 2013, the head of the army's arms department personally wrote to Birkenheier to remind him of Heckler & Koch's request.

A scandal has been brewing around the weapon for months after von der Leyen admitted in March that the rifle loses accuracy at high temperatures.

In April von der Leyen announced that the G36 had “no future” in the Bundeswehr.

In the meantime the media have been reporting that the Bundeswehr covered up information, based on internal reports that showed the weapons had shortcomings.

For the Green Party, this latest revelation was the straw that broke the camel's back, and it has caused them to attack the defence minister herself.

“That was the point at which the G36 affair became a real scandal,” said the party's defence spokesperson Agnieszka Brugger. “I can't understand why Mrs. von der Leyen didn't act."

Pressure on von der Leyen

It is said in Germany that a politician who manages to survive her time as defence minister has proven herself as a potential chancellor.

Von der Leyen is widely believed to have this ambition. But the G36 affair is damaging her reputation as an open and honest politician.

The latest revelations surround events that took place before von der Leyen came into office.

Nonetheless, in March 2014 a report landed on von der Leyen's desk entitled “Genesis of the G36,” which contained a paragraph with the headline “Engagement of the Military Intelligence” outlining how at the end of 2013, first Heckler & Koch and then two ex-employees of the Bundeswehr tried to influence MAD on the issue of the G36.

Their demand was that MAD should do something about the media reports casting aspersions on the accuracy of the rifle.

Up until now there is no proof that von der Leyen personally read the report. Nevertheless at least one civil servant in her department did read it, posing questions about whether the minister - who has spoken publicly about her intention to clean up the arms sector - really has her ministry under control.

Von der Leyen claims to have only learned about the army's lobbying for Heckler & Koch ten days ago, after a civil servant brought the report from storage at the ministry in Bonn.

The same civil servant had been given the duty of collecting documents on behalf of the parliamentary defence committee.

The committee wants to learn who within the ministry had spoken out in favour of the rifle at a time when their own investigations had led them to the conclusion that the weapon was faulty.

The department head who lobbied MAD on behalf of Heckler & Koch has in the meantime been relieved of his post – not due to his letter from December 2013, but because von der Leyen had lost trust over an unrelated issue.

In order to avoid further damage to her reputation, von der Leyen has done what comes most naturally to her. She has gone on the offensive, saying that it is in her own interest that the most intimate details of the affair are cleared up. At the same time, she has indicated that further structural and personnel changes will take place in the ministry.

Whether a parliamentary enquiry into the G36 affair will now take place is dependent on the Linke (Left) Party. While they remain receptive to the idea, they have indicated that they will wait and see whether former defence minister Thomas de Maizière - another politician currently plagued by scandals - speaks in front of the defence committee and if so what exactly he says.

Lithuania army suspends purchase of German weaponry amidst suspicions of defects - EN.DELFI

Tuesday, July 7, 2015

Lithuania is getting involved in an internationally-escalating scandal centred around G36 assault rifles produced by German company Heckler & Koch.

The Lithuanian army will be looking into whether the weapons are reliable and suitable for long-term use. It has therefore halted the planned purchase of G-36s for an indefinite period of time, according to the 15min.lt news website. According to the report, the German army has identified that the rifles' accuracy falls due to temperature fluctuations.

The use of such rifles in hot weather for long intervals leads to a drop in accuracy. "We have asked Germany for their evaluation. They said they were carrying out an investigation and would give an answer probably in autumn. (...) We have not received any accuracy complaints. Our troops consider the G-36 as very good guns.

We had planned to buy quite a number of them this year. But since the Germans have certain doubts, we have halted the purchase until we receive Germany's response," Lithuanian National Defence Minister Juozas Oleksas said.

I would honestly wait until I saw the final results of these reports. Greece doesn't have the money to phase out its current G3 service rifles to introduce the G36 or any other modern rifle anyway.

Was meaning to ask if you voted in the referendum and did it go your way?

I supported the YES side. The NO side won and we will pay this dearly in the coming weeks.

Our incompetent politicians went to the Eurogroup and the Euro summit yesterday without having a single written proposal... The ECB raised the haircuts on the collateral held by Greek banks. We have to come up with proposals tomorrow. The last deadline is on Sunday. Once again I doubt that SYRIZA will be able to come up with the right reforms that will be accepted by the creditors...
