Germany, 16 other nations on possible visa-on-arrival list

Minister of State for Tourism K. Chiranjeevi on Wednesday said a proposal to grant visa-on-arrival (VoA) to tourists from Germany, Russia, France and South Africa was under his Ministry’s active consideration.

The Ministry had also asked the Home Ministry to consider grant of VoA for 16 more countries in an attempt to give a big push to arrivals.

Mr. Chiranjeevi was speaking at the inauguration of India pavilion at the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) in Berlin on Wednesday. He said Germany was an important market for India as during 2011, over 240,000 Germans visited India. “Foreign tourist arrivals to India constitute only 0.64 per cent of the world tourist arrivals and foreign exchange earnings account for 1.61 per cent of the world tourism receipts. This is a matter of concern for all of us in the Ministry. Our endeavour is to increase India’s share to 1 per cent of the world tourist arrivals by 2016,” he said.

The Minister is on a five-day visit to Germany.

Mr. Chiranjeevi last week met Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and submitted a proposal seeking the extension of VoA for 16 countries.

Consistent with the Look East policy, the Tourism Ministry has included Thailand, Malaysia and Brunei in the proposed VoA list. It has also sought the inclusion of some Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries along with Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. The other countries proposed for the extension of the facility are Spain, Poland, Sweden, Norway, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago. The VoA facility is now available for tourists from countries such as Singapore, New Zealand, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar and Philippines.

yeah there was a process going on but there are few conditions too.

Great now terrorists and foreign agencies will exploit this....

Look at the small country like malaysia. They have introduced biometric system at the arrival, all you do is put two of your fingers and you are registered. The machine is 7 by 6 inches with laser light.

What is the problem?

I think all such visa on arrival agreements should only take place on a quid pro quo basis. :enjoy:

It is also important for businessmen. Tourism is also a major sector which will get benefit from it.

Usually countries have reciprocal visa policies for each other , meaning if country A grants visa on arrival for B , then B does the same for country A ... So if you were referring to this , such type of policy normally has always been developed on quid pro quo basis ...

Basic on the schengen policy, it will be diffecult for cuntries as German, France do the same thing to Indian, but bring the tourist vist to Indian will be helpful to Indian economy

..See the example of Thailand..The number of tourist arriving is many times that of India..just because of ease of going there....
...Remember, economic progress is the biggest counter for terrorism...
I agree that there are some elements who would like to misuse this.., but this shouldn't stop us from reaping the benefits it brings, which are many a times over...but the vigil has to be kept.

Living in fear = Living in terror. If we start doing that then the terrorist wins. So no need to fear!.
Let the economy take its course and we will deal with terrorists separately..

I agree. I was just putting it out there, considering how certain terror supporters use vehicles designed to encourage human to human contact.
