Another German rescue mission from far behind enemy lines. Just as brilliant as the Gran Sasso raid of 1943 when Mussolini was rescued. Though personally I think this one was far more daring as it was carried out by German units trapped in a pocket besieged by American forces, and were able to rescue 130 of their comrades who were captured and about to be executed by partisans. Even under such dire circumstances the Germans were able to pull off such an extraordinary feat.

Thats really interesting. Yes I agree very daring....but the bonds of military comrades run very deep, in many ways the deepest of any (because they are people that are risking life and limb for you...and you for them...and you all in it together...whether you are winning or losing).... so not all that surprising.

True. No doubt. Here is a similar American raid into German held territory. Let's just say the end result was the complete opposite of what the Germans achieved in their raid(s) behind allied lines:

German fallschirmjager were some of the toughest soldiers of ww2 and apart from para raids they were very formidable ground infantry as well. Most famous attack is the capture of eban emael fortress and crete. But late in the war when Luftwaffe lost air superiority they were converted to elite ground infantry and gave the americans and british hell in normandy and italy.Main reason they were so effective -
They were professional pre war training regulars and not conscripts with a elite training regimen.
They were under luftwaffe command and had their own equipment such as flakverling aa/anti personnel guns,88mm guns and fg42 automatic rifles(contrast with mausers for regular infantry).
Finally each fallschirmjager squad had 2 LMGs instea dof 1 per infantry squad(similar to panzergrenadiers of the army) which meant double mobile firepower. They also had double the number of mortars. So teh firepower of these units was formidable.

Forgotten weapons did a piece on the FG-42 now that you mention it.... seems good a place as any to put this
