German companies keen to join CPEC: envoy

ISLAMABAD: German companies are interested in joining the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to improve trade relations, the country’s ambassador said on Friday.

Ambassador Ina Lepel was speaking after a meeting with National Security Advisor Lt General (retd) Nasser Khan Janjua. German Defense Attache’ Colonel Klaus Wilhelm accompanied Lepel. The two sides exchanged views on bilateral relations between the two countries and the ways to further strengthen the ties.

German companies complain of uneven playing field

During the meeting, matters concerning regional security and stability were also discussed. The ambassador shared her experience of working in Pakistan. She said that Pakistan and Germany enjoy good educational and economic ties which would pave the way to fight the common challenges.

Lepel said that Germany is the second largest partner in trade with Pakistan in Europe. “German companies are keen to join the CPEC to further improve trade relations,” the ambassador said.

She said that there is a lot of potential for enhanced cooperation between the two countries. She stressed the importance of cooperation in multiple areas including human resource development, security, trade and defence. She also lauded the steps taken by Pakistan against terrorism.

Significance of CPEC

Discussing the Afghan situation, Lt. General (retd) Nasser Khan Janjua reiterated that Pakistan has always supported all endeavours seeking peace in Afghanistan but at the same time, Pakistan should not always be looked through the prism of Afghanistan. Janjua said Pakistan is a rising country and soon would be a gateway, connecting the world and generating a huge economic activity. “Connectivity at global level would come through us”, he added.

Janjua also sensitised the ambassador over rights violations in Indian-occupied Kashmir and stressed the importance of international pressure to resolve this issue.

We can use some help to revive the Steeles Mills or even some more assistance with PIA operations if needed, already a German is helping revive PIA present CEO of PIA

Great Lufthansa , if there was only a possibility to use some expertise from that organization to revive PIA, human resource development chance , just tremendous in term of engineering and other type of possibilities

Germans do have wonderful experience in management or consultations etc have great reputation

Just the other day we were talking about possibility of German Engine for Tanks

Really Germany is the one country that helped Syrian refugee and they surely deserve all the love they can get, fantastic country with great humanitarian record

VW , is a world brand for middle class folks and BMW is a quite popular brand already in Pakistan

Would be interesting to see what kind of industries Germany is interested in investing in or which sectors are they interested in

And Germany also happen to manufacture Locomotives

Last but not least any collaboration on Schools , Education wondeful chance to improve education in Pakistan

Sir, these are long term (decades long) projects and relationships with billions at stake. So that means all sides do their home work before signing the papers and transferring the funds. The fact that this is now out in the public about UK, France, Italy and Germany (from the European continent) wanting to join the CPEC, tells you that they have done their basic home work and have shown the willingness from a government to government basis. This is huge as this is the most critical step.

The next steps are what to join, how much to invest in, where, for how long, etc, etc. That would take time naturally. But its coming for sure.
