Can Geo TV save itself from Permanent Ban by abiding by SHC decision and shutting down foreign shows like MERA SULTAN &C.I.D. among others?

In response to the petition filed by an NGO, Amity International against violations of laws including PEMRA Ordinance by GEO Network, Sindh High court has warned GEO Network to curtail the airing of Urdu foreign content in excess to the limit (6% of the entire content aired) of the day or face a permanent ban in case of failure of compliance to this order issued on 25 March 2014.

As per the PEMRA Ordinance 2002 Section 7(2), the terms of the license allow only 6% of the Foreign Content in URDU language. The allowed limit would allow Geo Network to air merely 6% of the Indian and other (including Turkish) content, which would roughly some up to merely 86 minutes. However, currently, Geo Network, on its channel Geo Kahani has been airing 70-77% foreign content, hence blatantly violating the laws and regulations set by PEMRA. The complaint by Amity International highlighted this non-compliance by Geo Network, which leads to cannibalization of local talent and production.

The news of the decision by the court spread like the fire on Pakistani Social Media scene when famous news anchor, Mubasher Lucman broke the news on his twitter account:

Pakistan’s Showbiz society have highly appreciated the efforts by Amity International as well as welcomed this decision by Sindh High Court with hopes that it will bring more opportunities for local talent to showcase their own creative productions and efforts.

As per the representative of Amity International, the monitoring of the content being aired on Geo Network is already put under monitoring since the decision has been announced by SHC. Although it is left to see that GEO Kahani, a channel that seems to be entirely dedicated in broadcasting foreign content dubbed in URDU would be able to comply to the court’s decision. Mera Sultan (Turkey) is the channel’s most famous soap, followed by CID (India), Iffat (Turkey), Intikam (Turkey) and Jodha Akbar(India). It is yet to see that Geo Network will abide by the decision of the court or continue the violation of the PEMRA law as well as the Sindh High Court’s decision by keeping these shows on air.

That's exactly similar to what BD government barring people to flaunt other nation's flag.

Not really, when private channels get license under pemra rules they are bound to create 75% local content, what they are doing is buying cheap content from outside without growing local industry.

I am not questioning the violation of rule but rule itself.

The rule is to regulate the outside world influence, same as being done by BD govt.

No, it's there to develop local entertainment industry. Don't put a spin on it.

Many here will argue it as a good tool for keeping a tab on social ingression. BD can argue its action to be promotion of local support for nation's sport.

What members here think has no bearing on government regulations, government all around the world protect and try to develop their local industries so do we. Stop repeating the same thing like a broken record even though a logical explanation has been given to you.

Cultural invasion is most sought topic in pakistan and had been debated furiously lately. Keeping a tab on foreign content is one of the action plan and such rules only help in doing so.

you may chose to selectively pick up things and ignore others but forcing people to watch something and restrict others is same as forcing people to show allegiance to any foreign team.

The court is not cherry picking the programs, it's just asking them to stick to the 25% foreign content to protect local industry. The channel based on profitability can choose which ever programs they want to play in that 25% slot. And no one is restricting anyone, they can still watch foreign content on foriegn channels which are available on cable all around the country.
