Jiyalas burn The News, Jang copies as Geo blocked in few areas
Monday, August 09, 2010

KARACHI: Transmission of Geo TV was blocked in some parts of the country and copies of The News and the daily Jang burnt in a few areas of Karachi and Sindh on Sunday as the media group gave coverage to the hurling of shoes at President Asif Ali Zardari during his party address in Birmingham.

Many offices of cable operators in Karachi were set ablaze by angry activists of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Newspaper vendors were robbed of copies of The News and the daily Jang upon the direction of PPP leaders, besides, PPP workers were accompanied by police officials in hurling threats at cable operators and hawkers, sources told the media.

Most copies of The News and the daily Jang were burnt to ashes after snatching them from hawkers at gunpoint in parts of Karachi. Some PPP leaders and government officials have issued threats and warnings to cable operators across the country against the continuation of Geo News’ transmission, pressurising them to shut it down, but most of the cable operators refused to do so, sources said.

However, a private company named World Call and another one, KMPC, blocked Geo News signals at 2am early on Sunday morning. People were of the view that Geo/Jang Group is being penalised over the revealing of facts and speaking the truth. They said the ruling elite was angry over reporting of news regarding controversial visit of president Zardari in face of worst floods in country.

The president was not only being criticised in country, but international media was also grilling him due to massive human crisis in country while he refused to call off his UK visit. Anwar Shaikh adds from Nawabshah: Copies of The News and the daily Jang could not reach Nawabshah, Noshehro Feroz, Khairpur and Sukkur because unidentified armed persons set on fire bundles of the publications of the Jang group near Sakrand Town on National Highway some 20 kilometres from here.

The armed men stopped the vehicle transporting newspapers on National Highway, pulled out bundles of the daily Jang and The News, and set them on fire, and disappeared. Newspaper hawkers waiting for copies of the daily Jang and The News held a protest and chanted slogans against the people involved in the burning of copies of the newspapers.

However, remaining copies of the newspapers were later unloaded by hawkers in the presence of a police contingent. Journalists also staged a protest in front of the Nawabshah Press Club and strongly condemned the act of burning of newspapers. Addressing the protest, Zulfiqar Memon, Ismail Domki, Anwar SHaikh, Rizwan Thebo and other journalists said some elements were attempting to muzzle the media.

Police refuse to register FIR

By our correspondent

KARACHI: The Jang Group management repeatedly tried throughout Sunday to get an FIR registered against the burning of copies of Jang and The News in some areas of Karachi and parts of Sindh. The police, however, adopted delaying tactics and later at night refused to register the FIR.

PPP activists furious over shoe-hurling reports
Daily Times Monitor

LAHORE: Workers of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have resorted to riots and have created a rampage in Karachi and other parts of the country after different private TV channels telecast news of hurling of shoes at President Asif Ali Zardari during a PPP rally in Birmingham, UK, a private TV channel reported on Sunday.

According to sources and eye-witnesses, enraged PPP workers attacked and ransacked the offices of a leading daily newspaper in Karachi on Sunday morning and a majority of private TV channels had been blocked in several parts of the country. Offices of cable operators in Karachi had been attacked by baton-charging PPP workers and several cable operators had been forced to block the transmission of several private TV channels.

Furious PPP workers burnt bundles of newspapers and chanted slogans against a leading media group, which aired news of shoe-hurling at President Zardari. The PPP activists vowed to boycott a daily newspaper for three days.

Media is just reporting the news. It was Zardari who decided to go on a world tour while floods hit Pakistan. Don't blame the media blame Zardari and his "advisors" for the the trip. In this telecommunication age SMS and Video clips can be sent on cell/mobile phones to large number of people. The cable news networks and newspapers are not the only shows in town. This news will spread over the days as anger over floods spread all over Pakistan.

Didn't a military ruler - Zia, take you originally into Afghanistan and a second military ruler -Musharraf, took you back there the 2nd time. And if I read the posts here right, most of you blame the WOT for all the problems of Pakistan. So how have military rulers been beneficial for you?

.
Once again, the regime is trying to control the media. I seriously don't know how our administration can continuously make the same mistakes and expect different results. This is, at least, the fourth time they've tried to shut down or control the media, and each of the time they've tried in the past, they've failed terribly.

Sometimes I wonder if our leadership sold their brains for money too.

Military rule is not the answer to everything. It isn't the answer to anything, in fact. Pakistan needs better governance, but not military dictatorship.

It was quite distressing to see PPP burn jung newpaper , not from stalls but directly from distributors as the news stated , morening time the thugs came in and took all the newspapers and burned it and stating 3 days no jung paper will be sold

Gunda gardi ki intiha hogai hai

well military rule in Pakistan is very different then what you think, Musharraf has done things and spoke to public like none other has, it was military rule which gave freedom to press and media, Protesters did conduct protest in his time and they werent crushed at all, I believe that military doesnt work against Pakistan at all coz if there isn't Pakistan then there isnt any Pak Army! Yes military did go to afganistan during 80s to send back USSR of that time. After 2001, we had to go there again its not that we had a choice, If we didnt go there i'm sure we would off been in more mess since our enemies would have taken advantage and made more problems for us so Pakistani rule. :pakistan::police: it is also Musharraf which donated money to flood effecties then anyother leader we have seen so far. he did make money during his tours around world in recent years but when we needed money he is still helping i didnt see the richest Zardari or nawaz donating money for Pakistanis MUSHARRAF ROCKS i have more respect for him after this news now Daily Times - Leading News Resource of Pakistan
