NS is one of the most stupid politicians that one can come across in Pakistani politics, today. He took his "National" Party and turned it into a "Punjab" only party. How brainy is that!!!!
We berate Mushi on the Kargil issue and I agree with most of the arguments. But two things stand out as clear NS mistakes:
1. The briefing on Kargil was given (Let there be no doubt about that) and he could not comprehend what was being presented. Being the Prime Minster of a country requires intelligence and if he lacked in that field than he should have had a competent National Security Advisor taking him through the course. He was the Head Honcho and the blame squarely rests on him period. Mushi or no Mushi!!
2. His weak negotiations with Bill Clinton (Riedels’ papers should be read) were worse than what Mushi did post 9/11. Mushi was facing an unprecedented situation -- it was from the US point of view a "Pearl Harbor" all over again -- A super power was out to get blood -- a regional power was pointing the finger at you -- what would one do in a situation like that show US the "Birdie"/the Middle One? I think the answer was already there even before the phone call by Colin Powell.
On the other hand NS was facing US pressure who was doing it on behalf of India -- would US send warplanes to bomb Pakistan for forcing our hand?? I do not think so. We were already facing extensive US/EU/Japan embargos; a few more would not have meant anything. India was not going to go into a nuclear war -- as usual, India raised a disproportionate hue and cry and we succumbed to it and agreed to an unconditional ceasefire without any real politicking – going to US after a cricket match on the beckoning of the master is not a bold move at all.
Most of our casualties were on the retreat without a cover of a ceasefire. If Mushi is to be blamed for this hair brained scheme than NS is to be squarely blamed for capitulating because of lack of political understanding of the situation in front of Uncle Sam. One phone call did it for NS and another phone call did the same for Mushi. You are a better judge -- who faced a more difficult situation.
I am certainly not in favor of military rule but I am also not in favor of an imbecile ruling us.
