General Kayani’s extension was a mistake: Kaira

ISLAMABAD: Senior PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira admitted on Tuesday that it was a mistake to grant extension to the then army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani by his government.

“I admit it proved to be a wrong decision in the end,” Kaira told Nadeem Malik, host of SAMAA’s prime-time current affairs program ‘Nadeem Malik Live’.

“General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani was a popular army chief and we were in a state of war… Therefore, we decided to extend his term,” he said.

Although General Kayani was an intelligence officer, but the second term did not do any good to him either, he added.

Kaira’s remarks came a day after PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari defended his decision to extend the term of General Kayani.

“General Kayani’s extension strengthened my government as well as the Parliament at that time,” Zardari told senior journalist Hamid Mir. – SAMAA

Because Pakistan Armed forces is a national institution ,
And giving extension to chief and chieft after is not good because that way all the shift will try to earn point by favouring the party in power
And upcoming chiefts will also want same treatment
And it will also demoralise other generals in queue

He is actually right.... and I hope they won't repeat same mistake this time

Kiyani did well but he was no RS. He like many other Generals had weakness for real estate and then family screwed him over too. However he was most hated person in Pentagon and therefore must be doing something good.

Look you make well informed decisions. He probably thought it was not the right time. I certainly cannot judge sitting around in my home the options infront of him at that time. Hindsight is 6/6.

My bro who was surveying NW for gun positions after SW also thought the fight is going to be very bloody in comparison to SW. He thought terrain is way more difficult and a lot more built up areas scattered every 10 km. In addition Gulbuhadar and Haqqanis were the main groups who were already in deal with gov, rest there were few other groups in between. However after APS everything changed. Gul buhadar formed alliance with TTP and fully supported the attack on APS. Circumstances changed.

Gen Petraeus had meeting with Kiyani number of time and mention him the outcome of peace deals in tribal belt. But, Kiyani step back from this long due action,may be at home political parties pressure. But eventually Gen Petraeus was right. But again nature takes is course of action. APS and appointment of Gen Raheel ( PMLn call it mistake).
