Exelis to supply Saudi Arabian National Guard with high-performance air traffic management radar
Exelis has received a contract valued at more than $9 million to provide advanced military air traffic management capabilities to the Saudi Arabian National Guard (SANG).
Under this foreign military sales contract, Exelis will supply the GCA-2020 precision ground control approach radar to support the SANG’s growing aviation mission requirements. The contract was awarded by the U.S. Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts.
The first Exelis radar to be installed in Saudi Arabia, the GCA-2020 is a solid-state, electronically scanning radar with three integrated functions — primary surveillance, secondary surveillance and precision approach. The technology will enable the SANG to provide sophisticated landing guidance and manage air traffic control operations while meeting the most demanding flight safety standards.
“This award deepens our important relationship with Saudi Arabia and the wider region,” said Dave Prater, Exelis vice president and general manager of the Exelis radar, reconnaissance and undersea systems business. “As a leader in the growing field of intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and analytics, Exelis is committed to supporting our international customers’ evolving missions with these types of critical capabilities.”
This contract brings to 12 the total number of international orders Exelis has received for precision air traffic management radars over the past nine months. Recent orders from Poland, Sweden, Estonia and Saudi Arabia have a combined value of more than $100 million.
More than 70 years ago, Exelis pioneered the development of air traffic control and 3-D air defense radars for tactical and naval applications. The company remains the world leader in supplying air traffic control radar systems designed for military use. The GCA-2020 operates daily in environments ranging from the Arctic Circle and the deserts of Northern Africa to the rainforests of Asia and South America.
ROADMAP TO CAPABILITIES
C4ISR > Defense Surveillance and Mobile ATM Radar Systems > GCA/PAR-2000
The GCA/PAR-2000 is a compact Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR) / Precision Approach Radar (PAR) System providing high performance target detection in the airspace around an airport or air base. Simultaneous ASR and PAR operations from the single sensor provide accurate display of both types of radar data.
Versatile, multimode, digital color displays and full communications support all controller operations. The ASR covers 30 nautical miles (nmi) at altitudes up to 8,000 feet. The PAR coverage is up to 20 nmi with azimuth coverage of 30 degrees and elevation coverage of 8 degrees. A PAR-only version (PAR-2000) is also available. The GCA/PAR-2000 comes in fixed, transportable, and mobile (AN/MPN-25) versions.
SUPERIOR OPERATIONAL AND TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE
The GCA/PAR-2000 is fast and easy to install; its human-machine interface is full color and carefully arranged to reduce fatigue in the high-stress controller environment; and runway changes are achieved in less than a minute – much faster than any competing system. The GCA/PAR-2000 achieves excellent target detection and tracking even in severe environments such as heavy rain or snow. High stability and advanced digital processing including Moving Target Detection (MTD) and mapping ensure adaptation to the changing environment.
VERSATILE HIGH-RESOLUTION MULTIMODE DISPLAYS
The GCA/PAR-2000 includes two or more universal displays that controllers can individually assign to the ASR or PAR mode based on traffic needs. The FAA-certified ASR display format covers the air situation. The PAR display provides the 3-D landing situation in a state-of-the-art digital Az-El format. This patented display adds an innovative “bullseye” for a pilot’s view of the approach.
FOCUSED ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY
The GCA/PAR-2000 achieves its outstanding capabilities through integration of advanced technology into a cohesive user-friendly system. Air cooled GaAs Transmit/Receive Modules populate two active apertures for the azimuth and elevation antennas, thereby eliminating the single-point transmitter failure. Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) processors and power supplies ensure low-cost and high reliability implementations.
NON-STOP OPERATION AND LOW SUPPORT COST
The GCA/PAR-2000 modular, open architecture and solid-state design achieves availability and reliability superior to any other radar-based landing system. Incorporated redundancies provide fail-soft protection. Very low support costs are inherent through highly reliable solid-state technology, minimized unique Line Replaceable Units (LRUs), and extensive built-in test. Reduced deployed maintenance costs are a direct result of designed-in fail-safe/fail-soft operation requiring only scheduled periodic maintenance. Maintenance is further enhanced through the optional capability to remotely monitor all system functions via telephone lines.
