The main factor that dragged the US into this situation was its interventionism, starting with the invasion of Iraq and then Afghanistan, trillions of dollars in resources, a million people, and the fact that it had to withdraw after losing every region it intervened in, even making things more difficult for itself than they were even before the intervention.
