Gang Charged with Making Salt from Herbicide Waste

Gang Charged with Making Salt from Herbicide Waste
2012-01-31 17:57:19 Shanghai Daily Web Editor: Zhangxu
Several suspects went on trial in east China's Anhui Province for allegedly extracting 14,000 tons of industrial salt from the waste of a herbicide manufacturer and sold them to 12 provinces and municipalities.

The group allegedly started a salt company without a license in Jiangsu Province in 2009. They bought highly contaminated waste from a herbicide producer and made salt from them, Xinhua reported Monday.

The industrial salt was found to contain 55 milligrams of a herbicide per kilogram, far exceeding the 20mg limit adopted in the US, Europe and Japan, according to tests conducted by China Agricultural University.

The toxic salt was produced at 100 yuan (US$16) per ton and sold to private dealers for 350 to 400 yuan per ton. Ultimately street food vendors bought it at 1,400 yuan per ton, the report said.

The Yingquan District Court in Fuyang City, Anhui Province heard the case and will announce the verdict at a later date, Xinhua said.

I assume the death penalty for the gang, right?

I assume not only this is an international business, you are keeping up the trolling too

This is a major international problem because of China's food export. Not only is salt the most basic food ingredient, but this gang sold 14,000 tons of it. And these people aren't the only ones selling herbicide salt in China, there are probably a dozen out there.

Now your just reaching.

if only sales of salt isn't state run and salt's price is the same with cocaine, private persons may smuggle it.

by ur logic, anything China produces is international business, cause who knows, we probably "export" them

but ur trolling is still good, not as good as before tho

No I am not. I developed the habit of checking the back label when buying food to make sure it doesn't have "Made In China" on it. I don't bother to check label when shopping for clothes, and other stuff, but I will never buy anything food item labeled "Made In China" or "Originated From China" even if it is from non-Chinese brands. This raises the problem of finding certain food items like Bamboo shoots, then you got to substitute.

Because I know better to never trust Chinese for food, and it just takes one bad ingredient to ruin the whole food, be it bleached wheat, melamine-tainted milk, herbicide salt, sewage cooking oil, etc.

Accordingly, food importers are starting to label their food with "Made In P.R.O.C" in an attempt to hide their Chinese origin.

But if you have such a faith in Chinese food, then please do enjoy it. I won't stop you.

It's sad when Thai food items are far more credible than Chinese food items.

I do buy items from Thailand and Philippines, but never from China.

better stop buying Made in USA. One incident in one month of 2011 killed more people than all the food scandals of China in the past decade combined.

Fcking weirdos. Extracting salt from sea water would have been cheaper.

I never touch any Made in China food product. Unfortunately its getting harder and harder these days. Even freaking chewing gum is made in China.

I dont buy any product which has milk from US in it (after watching a documentary). Other things are okey I guess.

I do eat at Chinese restaurants but apart from that I make sure I don't buy any food product that is made in China.. Who knows you are getting a tainted product or a good one? But hey why risk your life when you have options readily available..

Chinese restaurants I trust because they are running there business for years.. May be even they are not sourcing from China.. I will surely check with them next time just to be sure..

. . .
Do you not understand the difference between deliberate and natural contamination?
Well I hope you don't drink American milk then, full of rBGH that's banned elsewhere. Increases risk of cancer and as deliberate as it gets.
